The South Suburban Health Alliance started as the South Suburban HIV/AIDS Regional Coalition which began in 2001 as a volunteer coalition of comprised of south suburban cook county non profit and governmental agencies dedicated to reducing the impact of HIV, STD's, TB and Substance Abuse among individuals and improving the quality and delivery of health and social services

The Coalition was developed as a way to unite service providers in Southern Cook County and to help patients and those living with and affected by HIV/AIDS have a seamless transition to services by establishing linkages amongst the providers in the coalition. Ann Dunmore is credited with the founding of the coalition. She united the group in a response to the lack of programs for individuals living with HIV/AIDS in the south suburban region. Ann a woman living with HIV, became a champion in giving a voice to the needs of people living with HIV/AIDS.
