⭐️🌟✨PATIENT SPOTLIGHT ✨🌟⭐️

I began working with Elijah in August of 2024. Since then, I have had the privilege to be a part of his journey and watch him progress in not only skills, but the emergence of his own personality. Eli has been both a patient and a teacher; exemplifying there's always something to learn, and your attitude makes a difference. Eli is always positive, and even during moments of protest is polite in his avoidance. The growth I have seen is a pure example of why I love the field of Occupational Therapy because it demonstrates how meeting someone where they are at is sometimes all you need to unlock more potential. As his rapport, trust, and play has expanded, so has his abilities to engage with others, perform and tolerate activities of daily living, and meet milestones that were previously nonexistent . He has progressed so much in certain activities that he can now copy my mannerisms and verbiage better than me. His mom does not just bring him twice a week for treatment, but attends every session so she can replicate strategies and techniques in outside opportunities. Congrats to Elijah & mom for all their hard work!

✨⭐️Meet Meagan Stanger, MS, CCC-SLP⭐️✨

1. Why did you decide to become a speech therapist?

I always knew I wanted to work in a field where I could positively impact the lives of others, and being a speech language pathologist has been a perfect fit. The ability to effectively communicate your wants, needs, ideas, and feelings with others is incredibly powerful, and I feel honored and privileged to have a career where I can help others do just that.

2. What do you love most about working with kids?

Every day brings something new! Each child that I encounter comes with their own unique personality and set of skills, and I greatly enjoy getting to know and build a relationship with each and every one.

3. What is something you are excited about in the summer?

I look forward to spending time with family and friends at the beach, as well as preparing for our second little one arriving in October!

✨⭐️Meet Lisa Tharpe, MA, CCC-SLP⭐️✨

1) Why did you decide to become a speech therapist?
-I knew in kindergarten that I wanted to be a teacher someday. Mrs. Waldren at Merritt Elementary School was amazing and I wanted to be like her. I went to Michigan State University to major in elementary education. My roommate was going into speech-language pathology and I liked that even better than being a classroom teacher because it was one-on-one teaching. So I changed my major and am still doing it 37 years later.

2) What do you like/love most about working with kids?
-I love the fact that every day is an opportunity to impact a child’s life. I can teach a child how to take turns and ask for the things they want so that they can interact with their siblings better. I can teach a child how to say speech sounds so they can say their name clearly. I can teach vocabulary so that following directions and learning in school is easier. I can strengthen mouth muscles so that chewing is better and a child can eat what the rest of the family is eating. SLPs, along with the OTs and PTs we work with, get to change lives.

3) What is something you are excited about in the future/summer?
I’m looking forward to visiting my daughter who lives at the beach.

✨⭐️Meet Jennifer Miller, MS, CCC-SLP⭐️✨

1. What made you decide to become a speech therapist?
-When I was in high school, service projects were required for graduation. All seniors completed an interest inventory and SLP came up high on my list. I then shadowed and assisted a local SLP as my service project and was totally hooked!

2. Why do you enjoy working with kids?
-The rewards that come from working with kids are priceless. I've had kids that I saw when working in the school system, who are now adults, stop me in the grocery store and thank me for helping them. Nothing beats the hugs and hearing a child say "mama" for the first time in EI. I had a parent reach out to me about 3 years after the child exited EI telling me that he had just said "I love you" and she felt compelled to share and thank me.

3. What is something you are excited about in the future?
-My husband is retiring in June so I'm going to spend the summer seeing EI kids and adjusting to our new "life". We love to travel so will spend time at the beach with family and hope to hike out west in the fall to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary!

Each May, National Speech-Language-Hearing Month provides an opportunity to raise awareness about communication disorders and the role of ASHA members in providing life-altering treatment.

This year’s observance is particularly special as 2025 marks ASHA’s Centennial, a rare and significant opportunity to showcase the vast impact of the professions on society—and how the work of audiologists and speech-language pathologists has evolved over a century. Visit www.asha100.org for more information.

In the spirit of bringing attention to our SLP’s and their wonderful, life-changing work - we will be spotlighting all of our SLP/SLP-A’s throughout the month of May!

🎉 ADA Playground Update 🎉

We’re excited to share a sneak peek of what our brand-new, inclusive playground will look like at Falling Creek Park! Thanks to everyone who voted on the color scheme—Option 3 (orange metal with teal slides) was the clear favorite and will be featured in the final design!

Here’s what’s next on the timeline:

📌 Spring 2025: Installation to begin after site preparation and equipment delivery
📌 Summer 2025: Playground opens to the public!

Stay tuned—we’ll be sharing more details about a grand-opening celebration as we get closer to the finish line. 👏
