My Story.
My Health. My Wake-Up Call.
Written by Dr. Emily Johnson, Director of Women’s Health Services at LMH and 505 Women’s Health.
As the female hormones decline and eventually fade away (menopause), we first have to make it through 5–15 years of tumultuous changes month to month. And as our hormones show up some months and not others, we begin to experience the negative health impacts in our other systems.
For instance, I have a significant family history of high cholesterol and coronary artery disease on my mother’s side. As I’ve aged to 48 (just being transparent here… be kind 😅), my cholesterol numbers have continued to creep up.
Despite fiber supplementation, daily exercise, a pretty decent diet, an apple a day (for real, every single day), and adequate red wine consumption (hold the judgment… I have high schoolers), it has now gotten so high that I decided it was time to take the next step and do a calcium score to see if I needed a statin.
I mean… my HDL is over 100, so that probably negates my high LDL, right?
NO HO HO!
I did NOT get a calcium score of zero, and I am at “mild risk” for heart attack, 30, increases one’s risk of 13 different kinds of Cancer.
