Have you ever observed the way a baby moves? First, they crawl. Then, they hangout in a deep squat. Next, they grab onto to something and pull themselves up. They’ve mastered the squat.

As adults, when learning how to squat again after injury or surgery, we tend to move from the top down.

What if we took this complex movement and retrained it the same way we learned it as infants? …Because neurologically we learn from the bottom up, not the top down 💡

Fortunately for our eyes, teeth, and heart we get a screen before symptoms arise. However, when it comes to our musculoskeletal system we have to wait until symptoms arise and then we can attempt to peel back the layers of signs until we get to the root cause.

A movement screen is preventative. So why isn’t it implemented as such in our healthcare system?

Let’s talk lymphatic drainage!

Whether you’re dealing with swelling acutely or post surgically, reducing it is always our initial treatment goal.

Traditionally, we’d throw ice on, but like we’ve discussed before, ice is not the answer!

We reduce swelling by moving lymph back to the heart.

How do we do this? If you’re in to see me I’ll use my hands and manually massage areas of high lymph traffic. But, what about if you’re on your own?

Here are 3 ways you can get your lymph flowing:

1️⃣ MOVE! Light movement after an injury or surgery is so beneficial because muscle action is a main mover of lymph. Our deeper lymphatic vessels have an intrinsic pump allowing for fluid to move when our muscles contract. However, our superficial vessels rely on an extrinsic pumping mechanism like the following 2 modalities:

2️⃣NMES (neuromuscular electrical stimulation) pump- this is your or tens unit. This will activate a non fatiguing muscle contraction.

3️⃣ Massage gun- this is your or Gentle vibration allows us to access our lymphatic system, right under the skin, creating a ripple effect through the tissue.

Let that sink in for a minute....

If you’ve ever gone to physical therapy before you’ve likely experienced ice and stim.

When treating injuries, ice is useful for about the initial 3-5 minutes after injury occurs. (Unless used for pain mitigation) After that, it’s prolonging your healing process.

So, you’re probably wondering why you received ice and stim at every visit for 3 months...
..because it is a billable service.

Treatment should be determined based on your needs and goals, not insurance protocols and profits.

This client was experiencing tricep pain with explosive pressing from the front rack position. Here’s what we did to fix it 👇🏼

⚡️shoulder CARs
⚡️thoracic mobility
⚡️lengthened lats and built up tissue resiliency
⚡️moved into new end range with inter layer tissue glide for tricep using rockfloss

Next time you are told to “rest” an injury, remember this 👆🏽

When we don’t move, we jeopardize our normal human function like, proprioception and strength.

When we move, we are able to keep our system functioning while slowly loading our injured body part and restoring its normal function.

Moving is so important, so don’t let that be the first thing you give up when you get hurt. (Unless of course you have a broken bone or injury that needs surgical repair).

If you had to choose one thing to focus on to maximize your health and wellness, choose breathing.
