What is Beltane?
Beltane also known as “May Day” is a Celtic/Gaelic seasonal festival celebrated on May 1st, the halfway mark between the spring equinox and summer solstice. It is the second of the spring festivals (the first being Ostara, the spring equinox festival) and celebrates the summer that is to follow.
Traditionally held as a fire festival, a main bonfire was held serving the source for all new fires within the community. A way to honor the harsh conditions they had faced in the winters prior and bring about prosperity in the following summer. They would dance, drink and serve food around the bonfire to symbolize this rebirth.
The most commonly known tradition is the Maypole dance consisting of a tall pole with colored ribbons streaming from the top. A villager would each take a ribbon and through dancing and spinning around the pole eventually they would all be wrapped around in unison.
There is so much history and tradition behind Beltane, we simply want to have this as a wellness celebration for the community to come together and connect.
