Happy Monday! Today in our Wall office, physical therapist, Dr. Caroline, is demonstrating the McGill Big 3 which is a foundational core stabilization series designed to enhance spinal stability while minimizing excessive load on the lumbar spine. It consists of the modified curl-up, side plank, and bird dog with each emphasizing controlled movement and proper bracing rather than high repetitions. When performing these exercises, patients have to maintain a neutral spine, engage the abdominal wall with a gentle brace as if they are preparing to be lightly tapped in the stomach and avoid compensatory motion through the hips or lower back. The goal is to build endurance in the deep stabilizing muscles which helps support the spine during daily activities. We focus on short holds with perfect form, steady breathing, and gradual progression in duration or sets as tolerance improves. Over time, this series helps improve core stability, reduced stress on spinal structures, and better movement during functional tasks! 👌🏻
