Behavior change doesn’t happen in isolation.
It happens when adults collaborate, environments are adjusted, and support is consistent.
That’s how meaningful progress is made. 💙

Research shows that taking away recess is not an effective consequence for improving student behavior or academic performance. In fact, it often has the opposite effect. ⛔️

Studies from the CDC, American Academy of Pediatrics, and numerous education journals highlight that recess supports attention, emotional regulation, social skills, and overall learning readiness. When students lose recess, they lose an essential opportunity to release energy, practice social interactions, and reset their brains for better focus in the classroom.

Instead of removing recess, consider alternatives like:
✅ Restorative conversations
✅ Behavior reflection sheets
✅ Targeted breaks or movement opportunities
✅ Positive behavior supports and reinforcement systems

Recess isn’t a privilege — it’s a critical part of child development. Let’s protect it, not take it away. 💛

Sometimes what looks like disrespect is really a skill gap.

When students struggle with problem-solving, social skills, or emotional regulation, their actions may come out as big reactions or rude comments.

Punishment doesn’t close that gap.
Teaching does.

Let’s focus on building the skills they need instead of just reacting to the behavior we see.

When we minimize or ignore lower-level undesired behaviors, kids often raise the intensity to get their needs met. If we only respond when things escalate, we unintentionally teach them that bigger behaviors are not only effective, but necessary.

To prevent this cycle, focus on catching and addressing needs early—when behaviors are small—so kids don’t feel like they have to escalate to be heard.
