POSITIVE THINKING: Much has been said about positive thinking in psychological circles. That wave has given rise to self-help books and innumerable seminars. Little has been said about the definitive meaning of positive thinking. In the simplest possible way Paul the most prolific writer in the Bible clarifies positive thinking this way: “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Philippians 4:8 (KJV.) I think Paul has given us an eight layer filter by which we can classify positive thinking: 1) Truth, 2) Honesty, 3) Justice, 4) Purity, 5) Loveliness, 6) Quality, 7) Virtue, 8) Praiseworthiness. Think on these things. Happy new year!

The sum of life’s happiness: Acts of tender kindness, little deeds of love, thoughtful courtesies, benefiting others, gratitude, consciousness of right doing, cheerfulness, a sense of satisfaction, good and happiness of others, self-forgetfulness, contented disposition, hope, friendship, love—“are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh” (Proverbs 4:22)

The sum of life’s bitterness and sorrow: Depressing Emotions, brooding over troubles, wretched thoughts, a morbid imagination, disagreeableness, continual frown, grief and anxiety, words that express discontent, desperation, unrest, selfishness, hatred—all these cannot remedy a single evil but they can do a great harm.

With the estimated 86 billion neurons in the average human there is no telling the heights even John or Jane Doe can achieve. In the words of one of my psychology professors, “We were created to develop for eternity.” But you don’t have to wait for eternity to get started. Someone once said, “The cultivated mind is the measure of man”—that is, humans. Successful people make it a purpose to learn something new each day. The Internet provides us with a myriad of opportunities for learning. Remember, the sky is not the limit. Get started!

Said the Roman poet Decimus Junius Juvenalis, “Mens sana in corpore sano,” a healthy mind in a healthy body.
Little attention is given to the intimate relationship that exists between the mind and the body. When one suffers the other sympathizes. Many a physical illness can be traced back to the mind. Consequently we should be educate and discipline the mind through study, observation, and reflection in order to preserve a state of homeostasis.
A negative thought will have an immediate effect on the internal organs and blood flow, and will in turn bring about sickness. Therefore we should develop the habit of positive thinking and an attitude of thankfulness.
