PA joins MRMC team
By Courtney Hoshour
The Missouri River Medical Center and Benton Medical Clinic recently welcomed another new member to their provider team with the hiring of physician assistant Chase McGlinchey.
McGlinchey, 31, has traveled to many different states for school and work. He hails from Katy, Texas, where he attended Cinco Ranch High School. He took EMT courses as a high school student and found them fun and interesting, leading him to further pursue a career as a paramedic.
He graduated from paramedic school in Bryan-College Station with an associate’s degree in emergency medical services in 2010 and began work as a paramedic in south central Texas.
Two years later, he transferred to Pennsylvania College of Technology to pursue a degree in applied health studies: EMS and graduated in 2015. McGlinchey stayed in Pennsylvania to gain more work experience and then attended Penn State, where he earned his first Master’s degree.
McGlinchey was a paramedic in Texas and Colorado for 12 years, also working as a flight paramedic for REACH Air Medical Services and had some military contracts, both in Colorado.
He would continue his education journey by graduating from the University of North Dakota as a physician assistant in 2022.
“I like change. I like experiencing new and different things, so it was easy to move for work and school,” McGlinchey said. “Plus it was easy to move to all these different places and find work pretty close to where I was living.”
McGlinchey found his way to Montana as his girlfriend is active duty in the Air Force and is based at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls.
He is not perturbed by the commute to Fort Benton from Great Falls, especially since MRMC has a nurse’s house across the street so commuters like McGlinchey don’t have to travel every day.
A physician assistant serves a similar role as a nurse practitioner, seeing and treating patients of their own.
“I will be doing most things that physicians do,” McGlinchey said.
Fort Benton is a stepping stone for McGlinchey as his end goal - at least in Montana - is to work in Great Falls. However, his girlfriend’s military orders will largely dictate where he ends up.
McGlinchey will begin seeing patients in early December.

New nurse practitioner joins MRMC team
By Courtney Hoshour
Missouri River Medical Center and Benton Medical Clinic recently welcomed a new family nurse practitioner to their team.
Jeffrey Smith has been in the medical world for 14 years, but did not take a traditional route into nursing.
Smith was raised in Butte, where he graduated from Butte High School in 1999 and served as a member of the local volunteer fire department. He worked a variety of jobs, but after seeing friends and strangers injured in his work as a firefighter, Smith was inspired to go back to school to study nursing.
“Nursing called to me and here we are.” Smith said.
In 2008, Smith graduated with a nursing degree from Montana Technological University in Butte and gained 13 years of experience as an ER nurse.
He then returned to school, earning a graduate degree from Walden University to become a family nurse practitioner. He had just managed to walk for graduation before the Covid-19 pandemic swept through the country and began to shut everything down.
Smith felt the brunt of the pandemic as board meetings and application processes were slowed to a snail’s pace.
It would take almost another year before Smith could begin working in the emergency department as a nurse practitioner at Benefis Hospital in Great Falls.
“It was definitely a culture shock and very hard work,” Smith said. “There were lots of questions with little answers.”
Benton Medical Clinic will be a change of pace from what Smith has been used to at Benefis, but he is ready and eager for the change. He especially looks forward to transitioning from emergency medicine to family practice.
Smith lives in Great Falls with his four daughters and wife - also a nurse practitioner - and is willing to make the commute to Fort Benton for numerous reasons. He appreciates smaller clinics and the way they value their patients and are family-centered. He also looks forward to a work schedule that will allow him to attend more of his daughters’ school events and to spend more time with his family.
He will start seeing patients locally the week of Thanksgiving and is looking forward to meeting them and getting to know patients personally.
