I wonder if I have been doing this optometry thing too long. A friend sent me this photo of our state’s capitol and I can’t stop seeing it as an elaborate eye. 😎

"Childhood is not a race to see how quickly a child can read, write and count. It’s a small window of time to learn and develop at the pace that is right for each individual child. Earlier is not better."
Magda Ge**er

Learning to read earlier is not better - or worse. Learning to read later is not better - or worse. Learning to read 'in the middle' is not better - or worse. Whenever a child learns to read is the right time. Earlier formal reading instruction, however, is not better, it is worse. There are children who 'catch' reading early, they crack the code with ease without laboured formal instruction. Others (little boys in particular) fare better when formal instruction is introduced sometime after six or even seven years of age. Success is more likely to come quickly and with ease when the child shows an interest and follows that interest. (Yes, as an ex-classroom teacher myself there are ways to spark interest where the tinder seems to be wet.) One of the best classroom teachers I ever knew could NOT crack the reading-writing code at all. Her school wrote her off as thick, and at reading time they gave her the job of washing the milk bottles. (Anyone reading this old enough to remember school milk?) She told of the day when she was 12 years old (twelve) and the words all 'just clicked into place'. She never looked back. Part of her success as a school principal and classroom teacher was because of her sensitivity around the cues for the "right time".
