Adventist Health is a faith-based, nonprofit integrated health system serving more than 80 communities on the West Coast and Hawaii as well as others across the U.S. through its Blue Zones company, a pioneer in taking a systemic and environmental approach to improving the health of entire cities and communities. Through this work, Adventist Health is leading a 21st century well-being transformation movement. Founded on Seventh-day Adventist heritage and values, Adventist Health provides care in hospitals, clinics, its innovative Adventist Health Hospital@Home program that provides virtual in-patient care at home, home care agencies, hospice agencies and joint-venture retirement centers in both rural and urban communities. Together, we are transforming the American healthcare experience with an innovative, yet timeless, whole-person focus on physical, mental, spiritual and social healing to support community well-being. In Mendocino County, our main priority is providing excellent care to all our patients who come to see us. Meet Melissa DeSmith, Multi-Site Practice Manager, who has been serving in her current role for the past 4.5 years. Melissa oversees our Medical Office Suite A and Sequoia Circle locations on the coast.
Melissa has been part of Adventist Health for nearly nine years and brings more than 22 years of experience in the medical field. Her journey began as a medical receptionist, her “dream job” at the time, and grew into a lifelong career. Over the years, she has expanded her skills, earned her BS in Healthcare Administration, and embraced leadership opportunities. In a full-circle moment, she now manages Suite A Primary Care, the very clinic where she first began her career journey more than two decades ago.
Melissa is passionate about ensuring patients are treated with respect, dignity, and kindness from the moment they arrive to the moment they leave. Equally, she finds joy in helping her staff grow in their roles, creating opportunities for them, and ensuring they feel supported. While her days can vary from back-to-back meetings to rounding with staff, her focus remains the same: helping her teams and patients thrive.
She loves the closeness and support that define the Adventist Health family and describes her team in three words: Best Team Ever! Melissa is also open about the realities of leadership, not every day is easy, and tough decisions can weigh heavily. Still, she finds purpose in being a source of encouragement for her staff, even beyond the workplace.
Outside of work, Melissa recharges by heading outdoors and going camping, a favorite way to relax and reset.
Thank you, Melissa, for your dedication, compassion, and leadership in guiding both patients and staff with care and purpose.

November is Native American Heritage Month, and we’re honoring the rich cultures, histories, and healing traditions of Native peoples throughout our communities.
At Adventist Health, we recognize the profound wisdom of Native American contributions to our understanding of health and wellness — from plant-based remedies and holistic healing practices to the importance of balance between mind, body, and spirit. These approaches continue to inspire and inform modern whole-person care today.
We celebrate the communities who carry forward these traditions with resilience and reverence. Their knowledge is not just history, it’s a living contribution to the future of medicine.

It can seem like teens are glued to their cellphones. They keep us connected with our teens, especially during the schoolyear, when the family is heading different directions everyday. But they can also have a negative impact on their mental health. More screen time and social media use can lead to an increase in depression, negative body image, poor-quality sleep and stress. If you’re wondering how to help your teen set healthy boundaries with screens, visit ahlink.org/3OpWFIT for tips.

Meet Brittney Platt, who has been serving patients and supporting care behind the scenes as a Phlebotomist and Lab Assistant for the past 12 years.
Brittney chose a career in healthcare because she loves to be where the action is and finds fulfillment in helping people, something she says heals a part of her heart. In her role, Brittney’s days are full and varied: from performing inpatient and outpatient draws, to placing specimens on lab machines, to setting up cultures in microbiology. She emphasizes that while lab work often happens out of sight, it plays a vital role in patient care and outcomes.
What Brittney loves most about Adventist Health is being part of a team that genuinely cares for the community. She describes her lab team as compassionate, hardworking, and like a second family. Every patient experience, big or small, reminds her of her “why” and reinforces her commitment to the work she does.
Outside of work, Brittney finds peace and renewal walking by the ocean or among the redwood trees.
When asked what she’s Made for More, Brittney shared:
“Made for more sunrises, campfires, and good times.”
Thank you, Brittney, for your dedication, heart, and commitment to caring for patients and our community every day!

Congratulations to our October Coast Hero — Warren Rake!
Each month, we take time to celebrate a team member who goes above and beyond. Someone who leads with heart, supports their team, and lives our mission every single day. This month, we’re honored to recognize Warren Rake, our incredible Senior Cook, for his outstanding dedication, positivity, and the care he pours into everything he does.
Warren joined Adventist Health Mendocino Coast in July 2017 and stepped into his current role in December 2020, leading the way in our Nutritional Services department. From ordering and menu planning to managing Sea Glass Café and coordinating food production, Warren approaches every task with creativity, commitment, and a sense of humor that lifts up those around him.
To Warren, our hospital feels like family. “Almost everyone is quick with a smile and takes a moment to connect,” he shares. “It really makes me feel like I’m part of something.” That spirit of connection and community shows in everything he does, from ensuring our patients enjoy nourishing meals to stepping up whenever his team needs an extra hand.
Warren was nominated under the values Be Brilliant and Be a Mission Owner, and he truly embodies both. He leverages his talents to shine, leads by example, and owns his role with pride and purpose. No matter the challenge, Warren’s answer is always a cheerful “yes,” followed by the dedication to make it happen.
Warren, your kindness, humor, and commitment to your team and our mission make you a true Coast Hero. Thank you for inspiring health, wholeness, and hope through everything you do.

Mendocino Coast District Hospital, Home Care and Laboratory All Accredited by The Joint Commission
MENDOCINO COAST DISTRICT HOSPITAL AS OF OCTOBER 16, 2015
MCDH HOME CARE AS OF OCTOBER 16, 2015
MCDH LABORATORY AS OF APRIL 7, 2017
The Joint Commission (TJC) accreditation is an important way of demonstrating that Mendocino Coast District Hospital, its home health program and laboratory all follow the same quality standards that large healthcare organizations follow.
MCDH has been accredited through TJC since 1973. We identified the need to meet the quality standards designated by The Joint Commission in the early years, and have maintained that accreditation to this day.
About The Joint Commission
The Joint Commission is an independent, not-for-profit organization that accredits and certifies nearly 21,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. Joint Commission accreditation and certification is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to meeting certain performance standards. To earn and maintain accreditation by TJC, an organization must undergo an extensive on-site survey by a Joint Commission survey team every three years.
