As the temperatures rise, Soldiers face an increased risk of heat-related illnesses as they routinely undergo rigorous training across diverse weather conditions. The Fort Bragg Chief of Environmental Health, Department of Public Health, Lt. Col. Owen Price has seen firsthand the impact of heat stress on service members.

To assess heat risk, Soldiers should use a combination of environmental factors and personal awareness. The Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) is a valuable tool for monitoring heat categories.

Never leave children, disabled or elderly adults or pets in parked vehicles. Studies have shown that the temperature inside a parked vehicle can rapidly rise to a dangerous level for children, pets and even adults. Leaving the windows slightly open does not significantly decrease the heating rate. The effects can be more severe on children because their bodies have not developed the ability to efficiently regulate its internal temperature. As the Army studies the causes and treatment of traumatic brain injuries, the Return to Forces program is already employing new holistic therapies to help Special Forces soldiers recover from TBIs.
From art therapy to pain management to sleep rehab, the center’s multidisciplinary team addresses the symptoms of TBIs to help soldiers return to work.

“Without sounding cliché, it absolutely saved my life,” Starr said.

The Return to Forces program at Fort Bragg's Intrepid Spirit Center tests which holistic treatments best help soldiers with TBIs.
