January is National Braille Literacy Month!

National Braille Literacy Month is celebrated in January to raise awareness about braille literacy and the importance of braille for people who are blind or visually impaired.

Why is January celebrated as Braille Literacy Month?
January is the birthday of Louis Braille, who invented braille in 1824 at the age of 15.
Braille literacy is a strong predictor of educational and employment success.

Some facts about braille:
-Braille is a tactile code, not a language.
-A braille cell is made up of six raised dots.
-Every letter, number, punctuation, and symbol can be written in braille.
-Braille can be read and written in many different languages.

November is Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness of the impact of diabetes on eye health.

Diabetic eye disease is a leading cause of blindness, and it often has no early warning signs. It's important for people with diabetes to get regular eye exams to catch problems early. The CDC recommends the following eye health practices for diabetics:

🔹Get a dilated eye exam at least once a year
🔹Keep your blood sugar levels in your target range
🔹Keep your blood pressure and cholesterol levels in your target range
🔹Quit smoking

You can get involved in Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month by: Sharing information about diabetic eye disease with your community, Spreading the word on social media, Working with the media, and Leading an information session.
