I haven’t updated everyone in awhile. Mom is doing really good. Her incision which goes all the way across her abdomen (about 12-16 inches) is completely healed. She is still in physical therapy and occupational therapy to gain her strength back. She is starting to get her appetite back so that is really good. Labs twice a week to monitor everything and she has 3 appointments in Charlottesville this month. She is starting to feel like cooking and doing some things she used to love like baking sour dough bread!! It was great to see that. Thank you all for your continued thoughts and prayers.

Update on mom!
We have been home for almost 4 weeks. Labs twice a week. Building strength and nutrition. She is doing amazing (even though she doesn’t think so). The doctors and nurses are amazed at her. For the first time her platelets are normal, they haven’t been over 50 in like 6 years. Her new liver is doing amazing! Thank you to everyone who has sent cards, called, and ask about her. She is a miracle and we are all so thankful!

Mom update! We travelled to UVA today for follow up with mom’s transplant surgeon and she received a great report. He is thrilled with her progress. She is doing very good considering only 25 days out from this major surgery! We also stopped for her and dad to meet their 1st great granddaughter. This little sweet bundle is one of the reasons that mom told her surgeon that she wanted to pursue transplant. Sweet sweet moment!!

Good morning from Charlottesville! A lot of great things happened yesterday. Mom was extubated (breathing tube removed) she was able to get up multiple times and set is a chair for several hours. She is now off of all extra oxygen. She slept 9 solid hours last night. Is up this morning already ambulated to her chair and is being transferred from STICU (surgical trauma ICU) to the transplant unit. She will go home from this unit- so we are one step closer! Mobility and nutrition are her two key focuses now. Pray for strength and continued healing today for her!! Thank you all!❤️

Good morning FB friends. They decided to leave mom intubated yesterday, which was disheartening but they want to make sure her lungs are ready and all the fluid is off of them- but this morning around 10am they extubated her!!! She looks and sounds great. Keep praying and believing. The doctors are thrilled with her progress. Today is a big day- we get out of bed, start eating and moving closer to getting home. Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers!❤️🙌🏻❤️🙌🏻

Good morning from Charlottesville! Mom had a great day yesterday and a great night last night. Her chest X-ray looks wonderful this morning, kidneys are doing great, new liver is working wonderfully. She has rested well for the last 36 hours. This morning they are doing a breathing trial and she is doing really well/ if she continues to do well, they will extubate (remove the breathing tube) this evening. Abdominal drains coming out today. She looks great. Thank you for all the texts, messages on FB, and phone calls. They have kept me going- Mom and I appreciate them so much.

Thursday 8/13 update
Sorry I did not post last night. We continued aggressively yesterday with medicine to draw fluid off of mom and help clear her lungs. Was able to wean from CPAP yesterday am to high flow nasal canula but throughout the day- even though she was stable and oxygen levels were great, she became tired. All the teams recommended re-intubating her to allow her to rest and her heart and lungs to rest. She was very stable and was able to make the decision to be reintubated around 6pm. This happened around 9pm and everything went well. It was good to see her resting well before I had to leave but very emotional as well. The teams here at UVA are amazing. Shout out to the Critical Care Team and the Transplant Team who are so attentive and so knowledgeable. Very blessed to be here. The new liver is doing great and kidney function is good. Just need her lungs to continue to clear. Thank you for all your thoughts and continued prayers!

Mom was transferred back to ICU yesterday morning due to fluid overload. She is on CPAP to help clear her lungs and this morning they are starting her on a new medicine to help her heart pump stronger to be able to clear fluid more effectively. A lot of fluid came off yesterday. She continues to have a very small amount of pain. Thank you for your prayers and positive thoughts!!!

8/9 post op day 2
Sorry for not posting last night. Been a very busy day. Mom walked yesterday, had her IJ (central line in her neck) removed yesterday morning and Foley catheter removed. She was moved from Surgical ICU back to the unit that she started on. Her kidney function is much improved. She ate regular food for the first time!! She walked from her bed all the way to the bathroom about an hour after she came to the transplant unit from ICU (this was about 50 feet each way)! Only taking Tylenol twice a day for pain. She is having some confusion when I leave her at night which upsets her and is frustrating and scary. They say this is very normal for all she has been through. Please pray that this clears as it upsets her a lot. Today’s plan is walking and eating- and lots of education for both of us with pharmacy, transplant services and other disciplines. We’re moving in the right direction! Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. A few pictures to share our day!

Post op day 8/8 Update❤️
Been another amazing day. They got Mom off of the IV medication to keep her blood pressure up last night. She had 2 arterial lines that measured blood pressure from inside the artery/ they took out both of those out this am- NG tube that goes from her nose to stomach came out around 2- she’s on clear liquids right now and tolerating them well. Liver function is great. Kidney function is expected to take a hit from this surgery, but she was making more urine this evening, they said it could take a few days.. She got up and sat in a chair today for almost 4 hours and then did great getting back to the bed. She could have moved out of ICU today but they left her until morning unless they need the bed for another patient. She will be back in the unit where we started tomorrow and we will go home from there- Transplant unit. The doctors and nurses have been amazing. Expected length of stay is 5-9 days. More to come! Here’s a picture to show you how great she looks!!! Thank you everyone!

UPDATE

Thank you to everyone for all the Texts, phone calls and mostly all the prayers. We continue to be amazed!!! The morning started off rough- Mom had to be taken back to surgery early this morning around 4am due to bleeding. A clip had come off of an artery and she was bleeding a lot. The team did an amazing job recognizing it and treating her quickly. She’s had a lot of blood and initially this morning they were not going to extubate her due to how rough her night was. Just this afternoon/ the doctors decided to give it a try. She is now extubated on no oxygen sitting up and talking. She is resting well and in no pain. She still has a ton of lines (2 arterial lines, a swan ganz catheter, multiple IVs) and 6 drips at the moment but those should all be gone by tomorrow. The whole team cheered when she was extubated and the first thing she said was - I love you all!! She is beyond blessed and humbled that a family would donate such a gift. We pray for them and hopefully one day we will be able to say how thankful we are personally. Continue to lift her up in your prayers. Thank you all again!!!
