Have trouble asking for things from others? Not asking for your needs tends to result in resentment, ultimately harming the person you are trying not to burden.
Here is a step-by-step guide for making requests (DBT DEAR MAN skill):
What to do to make a request:
(D)escribe - Start by stating only the facts without using the word "you."
(E)xpress - Tell them how this situation makes you feel (sad, angry, hurt).
(A)ssert - State your request clearly and directly, without being rude.
(R)einforce - Say thank you and express appreciation if the person agrees to your request.
How to do the above:
(M)indfully - Stay in the moment. Focus on the steps and not on doing it perfectly.
(A)ppear confident - State the above with confidence, even if you don't feel it.
(N)egotiate - If they will not agree to your request, attempt to reach a compromise by hearing out their position. Keep talking through it.
