When placing our loved ones what are the questions you should be thinking to ask?
Think first, NO question is a silly one. This is where you want to make sure you ask whatever you need, to be comfortable for your loved one to live.
What do they have for exercise to keep your loved one mobile?
What do they do to provide proper meals that meet whatever your loved one’s needs are now and into the future? At this time of life their meal needs might change.
What do they provide as far as extra’s like depends and cleaning supplies, as they potentially become incontinent?
Hours you are able to remove them for outings if you choose to take them out and about?
How often should we think about meeting with the care team?
How often do they do outings and can you attend?
What is the difference between private room vs semi private?
Can they start out in one kind of a room and be moved if it becomes an issue?
Financial assistance, what do they accept and do they have resources where you can seek out additional help to cover daily cost and additional expenses?
What could come up in the future that we should think about now, as they decline?
How do they get to and from appointment like Doctors or Eye Care?
How do they handle emergencies?
Do they notify families of upcoming events?
Remember this is the end of life care for you loved one and we need to be present and aware of their needs.
These are only some of the questions but never be afraid to contact and ask any question that might come up. You need to feel comfortable as does your loved one.

Looking and deciding when and where to find a proper place for our loved one.
These are hard times and struggling with the care and cost of care of a loved one influence our decisions. For some, doing the research early and talking with the doctors about the expectation of decline of our loved one can be hard.
Have you had an honest talk with your loved one to prepare them for what to expect and what they would like to see in that process of transition. We have to remember that this is their life as well. As much as we can or cannot take care of them it is important to include them in this decision and do it early before they decline to the point of not knowing. This can put them into stressful situation that can be hard on them and you.
Early conversations can do 2 things
1. Give you peace of mind as to their wishes
2. Prepares you with parameters and possible costs as to what is doable and that it meets their current needs now and into the future.

“Pool Time”

Not sure about you but I think we have had good weather this month so far. It reminds me to get those out and about before the long winters nap.
Have you thought about signing them up for something like Silver Sneakers/One Pass, through Medicare? Basically, it is a fitness programs for seniors. It gives you access to the pool and or gym for your loved one. Maybe they have weekly exercise class that we can do with our loved one or take them to the pool for a little walk about. I go to my local city pool and they have a lazy river that I do and see others like me wanting to keep fit with low impact exercise. Check in with their doctor and see what level you can start them on. Keeping them active through the long winter is so important for mind, body and soul. We got this for them!

“Levels of Care”
Thoughtful reflections in 2025

When we look for places to place our loved one, we need to make sure we look towards the future as well. Does the home/facility have the options we may need as our loved one declines. Not all decline in the same way but knowing what to expect or what they might need is helpful when planning the best place for them.
A visit to the doctor with a discussion of possible decline scenarios and needs we might want to consider, will better direct us on the path that best suits our love one.
These costs can vary from place to place and extra expenses might/might not come into place but should be on our radar. The little things like drives to doctor, incontinence issues, special meals, memory care decline, assistance with daily grooming. It is never too early to check these things out and be prepared, transitions are hard enough, let’s make it easier on them and us.
Ask the question of each place as to what are the levels of care are and additional expenses for those options.

You know I was watching a commercial on tv the other day and what a great idea!
Why don’t we start a project to the point of almost completion and then help your loved one finish it? Things like painting wooden stars for the Christmas tree or other items you can find at the craft store. What about a picture that has paint by numbers. Something easy to follow that falls within their ability. We do not want them to struggle. They can use them to decorate for the upcoming holidays. Yes, I said it upcoming holidays!
We have fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Winter, so many options for ideas. Let’s get our imaginations and theirs going. Since of accomplishment and joy!

“As we slow down”

As we slow down on the summer events and get our kids ready for school let’s not forget our loved one’s ability to enhance this time. We get busy and we tend to forget that our loved ones still need a little love. How can we get them involved? Maybe have a back to school night and have some sort of fun dinner planned and every one talk about the upcoming school year and show off the new school gear. Let’s let our loved ones talk about there school years. Let our littles learn what it was like back when.
They have so much to add and maybe our little can gain perspective on life and how to plan for their future. We never really know what will stick with our littles.

“Right or Wrong does it matter?”
Thoughtful reflections in 2025

The onset of dementia? Wrong or right do we push for the right response? I feel it is totally ok to let them be wrong and let it go. I guess it depends on the subject matter but mostly I feel let it go? Can we respect where they are at? Sometimes we want to correct them and we are thinking we are helping but at this stage of life is it worth upsetting them or just let them be? It can be so frustrating for them at times. Is it being respectful to them to just let them have it their way and be patient and just love on them? Again, at this point in life in my opinion you go with what is important than the correction. It is all about love, joy and hugs and being present for them.

“Remembering When”
Thoughtful reflections in 2025

Parenting and how hard it was from time to time, one thing I remember is being frustrated when I could not get my own self to have patience and understanding about what was going on around me.
It makes me think about when I get older how I will feel again about those same things. Me not being able to control myself or my thoughts when dementia happens. Wanting to break free of where I am and not have the freedoms I used to have. Having the urge to want to go places and do things but can’t because of restrictions on me. Wanting respect for the good choices and high fives for small accomplishments. It breaks my heart and makes me want to prepare my kids to think of those things when I get older. We have those brief moments in life when our kids respect us and have patience explaining things over and over again. Will they continue that when we are in a place where we are not seen every day? Do we teach them now how to treat us by showing them how we treat our parents? Food for Thought!

“Just my experience”
Thoughtful reflections in 2025

So, I am writing this because I cannot express how hard things can be at a time will you lose a loved one. I recently lost my Aunt and she was in hospice care for only about 1.5 wks. She went very quickly and she waited until the last minute to try and get her affairs in order but did not do a very good job of it. She said she took care of this and that but it was not completed. We are now trying to grieve while trying to go through massive amount of papers and closing out cards and account. It is like forensic bookkeeping.
Please people all I can say it is a tough subject talk to your loved one, you want to be able to grieve and love on them in those last minutes without stress on what needs to be done. Are you ready? Leave some concrete directions so they have a path to follow. This is so that they have time for you as well.

Have you thought about what the difference between End of Life care and Assisted Living care are?
In my experience they are different. Assisted living are for those they need help living and End of life is for those that are transitioning to end of life. Does the place have what your loved one need for that special need to help them move on? Are the costs different and the care different? This may be a talk you have with your facility/home that your loved one is currently. What do they offer at that time. Is there someplace that might better meet the needs for your loved one.
So many times, we place them into someplace that we think can handle all their needs but in fact they just do not cover that time of life. Is this an expense that we were not counting on and we scramble to cover those expenses?
Being prepared and ready will make this time of life easier and less stressful on us and them.

Have you wondered if they home or facility in which you loved one is living, is doing anything for the 4 of July this year?
They might try to do some sort of celebration that you can participate in. Can you contribute to the entertainment? Festive hats, cupcakes or just a smile and lots of friendly contact. Making sure not only your family member is celebrating, but those that are less connected. We here try to keep family member up to date on what is coming up and give lots of opportunity to get involved if they choose too.
On another note, maybe celebrate all those hard-working people that love on our loved ones every day. Maybe bring them a little love and let them know how much that they are appreciated for all that they do. Our loved ones, bless their hearts can be a handful from time to time and those that care for them show patience, love, understanding and gentleness in a caring manner.

“What’s on your mind?”

Let’s talk, talking points!
When you visit do you find it hard to think of things to talk about? Sometimes all we get back are yes, no, maybe. I think it might make a better visit to have a list on hand to bring up points that either interest them, past visits, share memories, family changes, upcoming outing, things they would like to do, people they might like to have visit, new friends they have made in their world, arts and craft that they may like to do on an upcoming visit. These are just a few things that might make your conversation flow better.
Sometimes just sitting and being there can be good but being prepared for those days that they are distracted or agitated having these points ready to go may be what turns this visit around.
This stage of life can be a rollercoaster of emotions for them. You can even think about a little sunshine to help them calm. Never underestimate a good moment in the SUN. This time of the year we should have plenty.
