✨Body Savvy Bites: Recap & Rewards✨

This week we explored how pain has real, feelable (palpable 😉) structures and how you can start tuning into it:

⚫Muscle pains usually have tissue anomalies you can feel with your hands.

⚫The way an area feels (tight like a rope, sticky like saran wrap, etc) tells the why behind the discomfort.

⚫We learned the word "palpable", to help you talk about those feelable-from-the-outside spots.

⚫And with light touch, you can even practice palpation yourself by feeling for your own muscle fibers under your skin!

💡The more you know about your body, the more powerful your voice becomes.

✨Rewards time!!✨

✨Body Savvy Bites: Walk the Walk✨

Your hands can learn to listen, and we highly recommend it!
With the right touch, you can actually feel the fibers of your own muscles sliding under your skin! ✋💡

Give this simple palpation practice a try- notice how much more your body reveals when you soften your touch instead of pressing harder. (hint: this connects directly to fascia- your body's first responder we covered last week!)

👉Keep following Body Savvy Bites for more ways to tune into your body's wisdom. The more you know, the more skills you gather, the more effective you become at participating in your own healing, care and keeping!

✨Body Savvy Bites: Talk the Talk✨

When something is palpable, it means it can be felt with the hands.

That's why massage therapists and other bodyworkers use palpation-
touching the body specifically to feel what's happening in the underlying structures.

So, when you feel a painful spot or tightness, and you or someone you trust can find the knot or pulling spot with their hands, it isn't vague or "imagined."

If it's palpable, it's real and feelable from the outside- and that matters. 💡

You can use this word to let your bodyworker know you can find the place causing discomfort with your own hands. 👐🏻

👉Keep joining us to learn the language of your body, so you can clue your providers in and work with it, not against it!

✨Body Savvy Bites: Form = Function✨

Painful tissues aren't random- they have structures and tactile patterns that directly reflect why they are in pain.

😓When a muscle feels hot and limp, that can signal injury.

🪢When it feels tight to you, it feels like a rope being pulled taught under our fingers.

🤚When there is an adhesion (sticking), it can feel to a hand like cling wrap stuck together.

👉The way the tissue feels under skilled hands gives your bodyworker direct clues about the why behind your discomfort.

Your pain has a story, and your body is speaking clearly- are you listening? 👂

Keep following Body Savvy Bites to learn more about how your body communicates through structure, sensation and response- so you can work with it, not against it.
It's on your team, we promise.🙏

✨Body Savvy Bites: Detail Detangle✨

When you feel muscle pain, it isn't "just in your head"- your body is giving you real, valid, physical data. Unless it's referred or nerve pain, what you feel is exactly where skilled hands can find the physical tissue issues that need help.

Your body is giving you ✨usable data✨.

👉Have you ever been surprised that a therapist could feel exactly what you were describing?

Keep following along to unlock both your understanding, and your rewards!

So many times a client has asked me; "Can you feel that?" As though what they are experiencing may not be real, somehow.
Here's the truth: pain is real time data. Your body doesn't usually send you unnecessary signals- it's telling you where protection, help, or release is needed.

When you feel it, there's almost always a physical footprint in the tissues. That's why massage therapists can usually find with their fingers what you're describing with your words.

👉Pain and discomfort aren't weakness.
👉They aren't made up.
👉It's your body giving you real information.

And the more you learn how to read that data, the more powerful your participation in your healing becomes!💪

📌Keep tuning in this week as we unpack more about the structure behind the pain and how to work with your body, not against it.

Body Savvy Recap: Tighten Up -> Tune In

This series took us step by step through what really happens when your body tightens during a massage, and how to work with it instead of against it:

🟢If you tighten up- your body isn't being stubborn- it's signaling too much pressure, too fast, or a guarding pattern.

🟢Resistance isn't "fighting back"- it's your body's was of protecting you.

🟢Fascia is your body's first responder, controlling how deep pressure goes.

🟢"Guarding"- Saying "My body is guarding right now" or "I can feel my body guarding right there" helps your bodywork practitioner clue in and adjust safely.

🟢Fascia behaves like oobleck (cornstarch and water): it stiffens with sudden force, and softens with patience and gentleness.

Every signal your body sends is real-time data!
The more you understand it, the more powerful your choices become.

Which part of this series gave you the biggest "aha" moment?

Ever wonder how fascia knows when to hold firm or soften?

The answer is surprisingly simple- it behaves a lot like oobleck (that wild cornstarch and water mix you might've played with as a kid).

Try it yourself:

Mix 2 parts cornstarch with 1 part water.

Jab is quickly- it hardens.

Rest your hand on it and soften- it melts around you.

That's fascia in action. It resists sudden force to protect you, but when approached with steady, gentle pressure, it opens and allows deeper access.

Next time you feel your body "push back' during bodywork, remember- it's not stubbornness, it's intelligence. Your fascia is just doing its job.

Keep following Body Savvy Bites for more ways to tune into your body's wisdom- because the more you know, the more powerful your choices become!

If your body is tightening up during a massage, even though you're breathing and staying present, that is NOT you being difficult!

✨That's your body guarding- protecting you.

Guarding is you fascia's way of saying:
➡️"This pressure is too much, too fast."

When you can recognize guarding and name it out loud ("I can feel my body guarding there"), it gives your bodyworker a clear cue to adjust- and it keeps you safe while helping your session go deeper in the long run!

The more you know about your body, the more powerful your choices become. 💜

We're back, everybody! We apologize sincerely for the delay; our editor-in-chief had a death in the family.

Jumping right back in with Form = Function!

Did you know the first body part to decide how deep pressure can go isn't muscle? It's fascia!

✨You may have heard of fascia before.
It's so much more than just "connective tissue".

It's your body's first responder- the part that decides how deep pressure is allowed to go, and how much protection your muscles, nerves, and blood vessels need.

That means when you feel resistance during bodywork, it's not your body being "difficult." It's your fascia doing it's job!

In a bodywork session, it's ALWAYS the practitioner's job to read the natural pushback from this fascia, and adjust their pressure and speed so that it doesn't feel the need to defend your body from the work they're doing.

If you ever find yourself receiving work that you cannot help but tighten up against, it's time to speak up!

No safe bodyworker should ever ignore this signal, even if the work is naturally uncomfortable, or even a little painful- it should always be within the bounds of what your fascia deems safe.

Keep following Body Savvy Bites to learn more about how fascia protects you and how to work with it, not against it. ❤️‍🩹

08/09/2025

If your body resists during a massage, it's not being stubborn- it's protecting you.

Sometimes the protection is immediate- like when pressure dives in too quickly, and your muscles and fascia guard to shield the delicate nerves, blood vessels, and tissues from harm.
That's your body's gatekeepers doing their job! 🦸‍♂️

Other times, it's *long standing*- the result of years spent "checking out" during pain or stress, or even living more in thought than in feeling. Your body learns to stay on guard for you, quietly keeping watch so you don't have to feel and respond to every sensation. 🥷

Both are forms of loyalty!
Neither is a reason for shame. ❤️‍🩹

When we recognize the resistance as protection we can work with it- using slower movements, gentler progression, and tuning in to breath and sensations so the body feel safe enough and *heard* enough to soften.

That's how real progress happens.

📌Keep following Body Savvy Bites for more ways to work *with* your body's wisdom.

08/02/2025

Ever found yourself tightening up during a massage, even though you're doing your best to relax?

I promise, it's not because you're 'bad at relaxing'.

Your body is most likely responding to one of two scenarios;
either-

1) The pressure is deepening too quickly for your body's gatekeepers to feel safe-
it is *literally* preventing damage to the very vital, *very squishable* nerves, blood vessels, and even muscle tissues that are vulnerable to this level of pressure.

(This is body wisdom, and even if the pressure feels needed, the ONLY answer here is to back off, and reapproach slowly to give the tissues a chance to come out of guarding.)

-or-

2) You have lived for a long time by checking out of your body, often due to trauma, chronic pain, or stress, and being the amazing, committed teammate your body is, it has said;
"Don't you worry- you don't even have to feel me! I will make sure we are safe. I *promise*."

(This is a pattern to shift, but not a reason to feel shame! The easiest way is to return to your breath- just feel it, without trying to change it or control it. More on this in "Walk The Walk" at the end of this series!)

Relaxing is absolutely a skill- but it's a skill of feeling, not a skill of doing!

This is 100% about clarity; not shame. ❤️‍🩹

This is why we say that a bodyworker who insists it's your job to relax, but fails to check in on their pressure, speed, and presence of their client is a HUGE red flag! 🚩

Understanding this is key to keeping yourself safe in any bodywork environment- and to getting the most out of your massage!

💡Keep tuning in all week for more Body Savvy Bites- very post helps you understand your body a little better, and every insight brings you closer to a massage that actually *works* for you!
