Whenever a nerve fiber has pressure on it, there is a distortion of it's signal. If this altered signal is going to, for example, a muscle, that altered signal will cause the muscle to be unable to relax, and can cause pain. If that affected nerve is supplying an internal organ, that distortion of information will reduce the organs ability to function correctly.
