The White House moved decisively on Tuesday to define President Trump's call to "nationalize" elections, clarifying that the President is simply demanding the passage of the SAVE Act—a bill the administration describes as a “huge, common sense piece of legislation.”
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt pushed back on media confusion, explaining that Trump’s comments were a direct mandate for a federal standard requiring Voter ID and proof of citizenship, rather than a federal takeover of local operations.
“What the President was referring to is the SAVE Act,” Leavitt told reporters. “Which is a huge, common sense piece of legislation... that President Trump is committed to signing into law.”
Leavitt framed opposition to the bill as illogical, arguing that the requirement is a basic standard of election integrity.
“I don't think any rational person who's being honest with themselves would disagree with the idea of requiring citizens... to present an ID,” she declared. “That's what the President wants to see happen.”
Leavitt also confirmed that Trump has spoken directly with Speaker Mike Johnson to urge an immediate vote on the measure.
