I know I haven’t posted anything to this page in a long time…and this one may ruffle a few feathers, but it’s something I feel strongly about. The evidence doesn’t lie! Feed-play-sleep is not supportive of continued breastfeeding. ❤️

Unless your healthcare provider, sleep specialist or sleep consultant is informing you that using a feed-play-sleep routine is associated with early breastfeeding cessation you are being let down.

Feeding to sleep is the biological norm and continuing to do so past 6 months and into the toddler years is not a sleep problem or negative sleep association and is actually associated with prolonged breastfeeding.

Feed-play-sleep jeopardises the breastfeeding relationship and that should be spelled out before any parent is expected to follow it as a recommendation for their family.

Great nutritional info for healthy pregnancy and motherhood to be found at Functional Maternity. Also, Sarah is here in NoCo so if you’re local she is a fabulous resource and practitioner for helping you achieve functional health through pregnancy and beyond.

A 2011 study set out to discover the dietary needs for vitamin D in pregnancy.

At the time, this was a bold study that countered all previously known measures of vitamin D in pregnancy. The researchers’ goal was to raise and maintain serum 25(OH)D levels at a minimum of 32 ng/mL throughout
pregnancy. What they found was that a dosage of 4,000 IU/day(d) safely maintained these levels. There was not a single adverse event during the trial that could be attributed to the dosage of vitamin D. This single study changed the course of how nutritional science viewed vitamin D in pregnancy.

Several other studies followed and found that higher doses of vitamin D are not only safe but also reduce the risk of cesarean delivery, reduce the risk of preterm birth, decrease complications in pregnancy, and decrease the incidence of gestational diabetes.

Having should not prevent you from having close contact with your baby. 👶🏻👶🏼👶🏽👶🏾👶

Early and exclusive breastfeeding and skin-to-skin contact is critical for the baby’s health, especially for babies born early or small.

Yes to this! 💞

Imagine how intense hunger must feel when you’ve only ever known complete satisfaction...

Imagine how lonely a crib must feel when you have only ever experienced the cramped tight embrace of your Mama’s womb...

Imagine how deafening silence must be when you have never not heard the beating of your Mama’s heart...

Let’s all have grace and patience for the babies as they adapt to life in the big wide world. These first few months should not be a race to be separated as soon as possible. This season too shall pass 🌿

Last night I had the honor of providing support and companionship alongside some of my doula sisters at the annual Walk to Remember in Fort Collins.

This event exists to support bereaved parents and families in their grief journey. It’s a night full of love and tears, heartbreak and healing. It was hard. And so very beautiful.

Celebrating siblings today! Are your siblings your best friends? Partners in crime? What about your kiddos? Some of my favorite sibling moments have been between my children. 😍⠀

Share your own memories of sibling sweetness and shenanigans with me in the comments. I like to say that my claim to fame is that I am an only child with six siblings. Bonus points if you can sort that one out! 🤔⠀

Close contact and early, exclusive breastfeeding helps a baby to thrive.

A woman with COVID-19 should be supported to
• breastfeed safely
• hold her newborn skin-to-skin
• share a room with her baby

It’s World Doula Week! Birth matters. Doulas make a difference. At a time when everything feels topsy turvy, birthing families need support more than ever. The loving support and personalized education a doula can give you is more valuable than ever before. Surround yourself with a team who can fully support you. All of us doulas are still here. I’m still here! 🥰

I’m still supporting current clients, taking new clients, educating families, attending births (with proper precautions), and generally loving on the families in my care. I’m getting creative....video meetings, online education platforms, remote support options. It may look a bit different at times, but all the same heart is still there.

If you have friends who are expecting, please tell them about doulas and what we do. Having strong support and being well prepared is absolutely crucial for those giving birth during this unprecedented time.

Today, I’m asking you to help me with a very specific need facing the Colorado birth community.

**The following text has been adapted from Monet Nicole - Birth Doula and Photog in Denver who started this petition. This information applies to all the hospitals here in Northern Colorado as well. Please read and sign!**

Just yesterday, my clients and I learned that doulas are not being allowed to support their clients by attending their birth as both hospitals and birth centers are tightening restrictions.

While I understand the motivation behind this…I do not understand the logic. Evidence consistently proves that continued birth support IMPROVES maternal health outcomes, which only helps our overly taxed medical system.

While some cesarean births are absolutely necessary, doulas and continued birth support reduce unnecessary cesareans and interventions by around 40 percent. What does that mean during the COVID-19 crisis? Less cesareans mean far less staff per birth as well as a shorter recovery time in the hospital.

Right now more than ever, we need as many beds available as possible. We need to utilize our medical staff wisely. Continued birth support can help make that happen.

I created a petition I hope to send to Governor Polis in the next few days after seeing the great success Michigan doulas had (their governor signed an executive order that asks hospitals to NOT consider doulas as an additional visitor but rather an important part of the birth team).

Could you please sign and share? I would LOVE to reach 1000 signatures by the end of the day!

** Please know I am still actively taking clients during this time. I have systems in place to support my birth clients remotely for the duration of these restrictions. Having a supportive team is more important than ever as birthing families face additional stress. Please pass along my info: www.cherishbirthing.com to any families needing support.***

291 signatures are still needed! Doulas are Essential - Colorado

Yes! When I work with clients prenatally, we talk a lot about the fact that their birth and ALL the decisions around it are theirs. It takes a lot of strength and courage to stick to your beliefs, but it’s worth it!

Fun Fact Friday: The only disposable organ, the placenta forms completely during pregnancy, sustains the baby’s development in utero, and is birthed shortly after baby’s arrival having fulfilled its purpose. It is a fascinating and complex organ, performing multiple functions including carrying oxygen and nutrients to baby, carrying waste away from baby, and delivering immunity to the baby that helps protect baby for three to six months after birth.

I don’t know about you, but I think growing a placenta is a super power!

Truth here.

I was lucky to have people who wanted to celebrate the life of our daughter, I just had some a bit late, which left me feeling exhausted as shown in my picture, staring at everyone wishing they would leave so I could finally get some sleep.
