Department of Health and Exercise Science at Colorado State University

Department of Health and Exercise Science at Colorado State University Through our facilities, research and academics, we emphasize activity, wellness, and prevention in Health and Exercise Science and a Ph.D. J. of Physiology, J.

The Department of Health and Exercise Science, part of the College of Health and Human Sciences, is committed to a life-altering education for every one of our 1400 undergraduate majors. Depending on their interest and career goals, students choose a track in Heath Promotion or Sports Medicine. The Health Promotion concentration prepares students for careers in the field of health promotion and wellness. Sports Medicine is primarily for students planning to pursue careers in physical or occupational therapy, medicine, or go on to graduate school in Exercise Science. We also provide exceptional graduate training in the form of an M.S. in Human Bioenergetics. The department is home to the Human Performance Clinical/Research Laboratory, a state-of-the-art research facility designated as a Program of Research and Scholarly Excellence at CSU. Faculty conduct research in a variety of areas centered around Optimizing Human Health and Preventing Age-related Disease. Faculty research is funded by government (e.g. National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense), Foundation (e.g. American Heart Association, National Dairy Council) and Industry (e.g. Pfizer, AstraZeneca) sources and published in high-impact journals (e.g. of Gerontology). In the spirit of our land-grant heritage, we provide innovative and meaningful outreach/engagement programs (e.g. Heart Disease Prevention Program, Adult Fitness, Youth Sports Camps) that fit our mission and provide value to the community. In HES, we aim to be one of the top few departments in the U.S. That objective is built on inspiring every person here to chase personal goals of greatness while simultaneously working for the common good. We treat each other as family; we celebrate achievements, offer support when life gets in the way and provide constructive criticism when one of us isn't pulling our weight. Finally, we abide by the overarching tenet that "It's our department and we run it the way we want to.โ€

What if 'getting your bell rung' didn't have to echo forever? ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿง

Department of Health and Exercise Science at Colorado State University's Jaclyn Stephens, director of the BRAINSTORM Lab, is leading groundbreaking research on both short- and long-term effects of concussions, euphamistically known as "getting your bell rung," and exploring promising strategies for recovery, including yogaโ€™s potential in rewiring the brain.

In a recent episode of CSUโ€™s podcast, The Audit, Dr. Stephens delves into how even small tweaks in recovery approaches can make a powerful impactโ€”especially for student-athletes and anyone who has sustained traumatic brain injuries.

Check out the episode to hear how Dr. Stephens and her team are pioneering new ways to understand and heal the brain ๐Ÿ”— col.st/ibbOX

๐Ÿง ๐Ÿš— How can everyday actions like driving help detect early signs of cognitive decline?

Dr. Neha Lodha, an associate professor in the Department of Health and Exercise Science at Colorado State University, is leading innovative research that explores how subtle changes in driving patterns may signal the onset of Alzheimerโ€™s or other impairments before a formal diagnosis. Using passive monitoring tools and a state-of-the-art driving simulator, her team is uncovering new ways to support early detection and intervention.

Her work was recently featured in an Alzheimer's Association press release, spotlighting its potential to advance research on driving safety and cognitive health.

๐Ÿ“ฃ The study is still recruiting participants ages 60-85, learn more and connect with the MNR Lab at mnrlab@colostate.edu ๐Ÿ“จ

Weโ€™re continuing our HES summer standout series with .lynn_07! ๐Ÿ
ย
Kate is from Fort Collins and always knew she wanted to be a Ram. CSU holds a special place in her heart (her parents met here, and she even celebrated her wedding at the stadium! ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›).
ย
Her passion for health and exercise started with cross country in high school and deepened after losing a friend to leukemia. That experience inspired Kate to pursue cancer rehabilitation.
ย
This summer, sheโ€™s interning with the UNC Cancer Rehabilitation Instituteย in Greeley, working one-on-one with clients in or recovering from treatment, helping them build strength, confidence, and connection. ๐Ÿ’ช
ย
Her favorite part? Watching her clients grow stronger and building community with fellow interns (and yes, thereโ€™s plenty of Spikeball and Pickleball too ๐Ÿ“).
ย
Kate hopes to continue supporting cancer survivors through movement, compassion, and care. Weโ€™re so proud to see her turning knowledge into impact! ๐ŸŒŸ

๐ŸŽ“ Outstanding Grad Spotlight: Jessica Franson

Health & Exercise Science โ€“ Exercise Science Concentration

Jessica Franson came to CSU because of the mountains, community, and active lifestyle, but she found so much more. ๐Ÿ’š

Despite battling mental health challenges and balancing a 4.0 GPA, research, and clinical experience, Jessica transformed her college years into a journey of resilience, empathy, and purpose. From the CSU Health Network to leading exercise programs for cancer survivors in the Physical Activity for Treatment and Prevention Lab, she turned passion into impact.

Now named the Outstanding Exercise Science Graduate, Jessica is heading to The Ohio State University to begin her Doctor of Physical Therapy, carrying the strength, support, and friendships she built at CSU.

๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œI try to remember to be proud of myself because I am exactly where I dreamed of being since little freshman Jessie decided she wanted to be a PT.โ€ โ€“ Jessica Franson
