Department of Health and Exercise Science at Colorado State University

Department of Health and Exercise Science at Colorado State University Through our facilities, research and academics, we emphasize activity, wellness, and prevention in Health and Exercise Science and a Ph.D. J. of Physiology, J.

The Department of Health and Exercise Science, part of the College of Health and Human Sciences, is committed to a life-altering education for every one of our 1400 undergraduate majors. Depending on their interest and career goals, students choose a track in Heath Promotion or Sports Medicine. The Health Promotion concentration prepares students for careers in the field of health promotion and wellness. Sports Medicine is primarily for students planning to pursue careers in physical or occupational therapy, medicine, or go on to graduate school in Exercise Science. We also provide exceptional graduate training in the form of an M.S. in Human Bioenergetics. The department is home to the Human Performance Clinical/Research Laboratory, a state-of-the-art research facility designated as a Program of Research and Scholarly Excellence at CSU. Faculty conduct research in a variety of areas centered around Optimizing Human Health and Preventing Age-related Disease. Faculty research is funded by government (e.g. National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense), Foundation (e.g. American Heart Association, National Dairy Council) and Industry (e.g. Pfizer, AstraZeneca) sources and published in high-impact journals (e.g. of Gerontology). In the spirit of our land-grant heritage, we provide innovative and meaningful outreach/engagement programs (e.g. Heart Disease Prevention Program, Adult Fitness, Youth Sports Camps) that fit our mission and provide value to the community. In HES, we aim to be one of the top few departments in the U.S. That objective is built on inspiring every person here to chase personal goals of greatness while simultaneously working for the common good. We treat each other as family; we celebrate achievements, offer support when life gets in the way and provide constructive criticism when one of us isn't pulling our weight. Finally, we abide by the overarching tenet that "It's our department and we run it the way we want to.”

From the classroom, to the weight room, to the field with CSU Men's Rugby, Julian Khalek embodies what it means to be an HES Ram! 🐏💪

Though he was initially unsure what he wanted to study upon graduating from high school, Julian was drawn to CSU and our HES program because of the wide array of career options available for our grads.

“At the time, I didn’t know exactly what job I wanted after graduation, I just knew I loved to exercise,” he said. “Discovering HES at CSU gave me hope that I didn’t need to have everything figured out yet, and I found so much comfort in that.”

Get to know more about Julian in this Q&A! ⬇️

Q: What does Health and Exercise Science mean to you?
A: HES is about more than just educating the public on good health practices; a Google search can tell you everything you need to know about that.

In HES, our work becomes meaningful when we genuinely care about the health of others. At HES, health is only the starting point; building real connections with people is the true catalyst for creating a healthier world.

Q: What communities do you hope to serve in your career?
A: I am super excited to begin my career as a high school strength and conditioning coach. My passion for exercise began in my own high school weight room, and I hope to inspire that same spark in another school’s student body.

Watching students grow from freshmen into strong, athletic seniors earning college offers is something truly special about this setting. Knowing that I contributed to their athletic success is one of the most gratifying feelings for me.

Driven by his faith and his passion to help people optimize their health, we cannot wait to see what’s next for Julian - keep up the incredible work!

What if 'getting your bell rung' didn't have to echo forever? 🤔🧠

Department of Health and Exercise Science at Colorado State University's Jaclyn Stephens, director of the BRAINSTORM Lab, is leading groundbreaking research on both short- and long-term effects of concussions, euphamistically known as "getting your bell rung," and exploring promising strategies for recovery, including yoga’s potential in rewiring the brain.

In a recent episode of CSU’s podcast, The Audit, Dr. Stephens delves into how even small tweaks in recovery approaches can make a powerful impact—especially for student-athletes and anyone who has sustained traumatic brain injuries.
