I generally have a lot of things to look forward to in my weeks. Without question Thursday night Animal Flow with is pretty high on my list.

He is a highly skilled movement practitioner, instructor and human being . I show up to that class busy in my head, disconnected from my heart and body.

His authenticity combined with his skill and incredible ability to take ALL 12+ students from the beginning of class, step by step, one new move at a time, to a complete, complex flow in an hour is phenomenal.

In that hour and 15 minutes I drop from my head into my body and leave connected to my heart.

As human beings what separates us from animals is our supra-limbic brain. This allows us to take information in, then to PAUSE before we respond. To take information in through the heart then into the brain to decide how we want to BE and MOVE through this life.

This is a movement class, I feel more balanced, coordinated and awake. As well I know I am getting stronger and love the carry over to climbing. This class is also an opportunity to connect with your primal self to remind you of your opportunity as a human on this planet.

Thank you for this gift . Whoโ€™s coming with me next week ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฆ?

I had the opportunity this week to climb at Eldorado Canyon with the wizard, Ben Markhart IFMGA. We moved so efficiently, effectively, quickly and safely up the climbs. I have been climbing for 10+ years and this experience was very different for me. The way Ben streamlined my harness, skillfully placed gear and built incredibly efficient anchors allowed me to move freely, opening up a new mental and physical space for me to engage. Moving this way up the rock was absolutely exhilarating for me and it has ignited the desire to explore the answers to this questionโ€ฆ

What are the necessary BIO (life) MOTOR (movement) abilities, as a climber, to move efficiently, effectively, quickly and safely in your desired environment, be it rock, ice, alpine or mixed?

I see two different components of optimizing this situation. The external systems or the individual's ability to lead/guide. This includes but is not limited to preparation before the climb, choosing, organizing and implementing the necessary gear and systems. This is not my expertise and I will stay in my own lane here. This is my weakness and why climbing with and learning from someone with the highest level of skill like Ben is a priority to me.

Then the internal system, or your own human body. This is my lane.

7 Biomotor Abilities: (prioritized in relation to climbing)
>Flexibility
>Balance
>Coordination
>Agility
>Endurance
>Strength
>Power

>>Priorities for climbing and the corresponding BioMotor abilities:

1. Awareness: Flexibility, Balance and Coordination
>The recognition of different parts of oneโ€™s own body, their relative position during movement and their environment.
2. Ability to move in all planes of motion: Strength and Coordination
Posture/Stability: Balance
3. Body Tension: Coordination 4. Strength and Power
5. Optimal Breathing Pattern

>>Now how do we train this from the ground up?

Climbing Specific:
>Awareness exercises
>Myofascial stretching
>Posture Training: Balance and Stability exercises
>Strength exercises incorporating all planes of motion, bipedal/quadrupedal
>Breathing Exercises appropriately implemented with each previous step

Letโ€™s do this!
