On the occasion of , we want to recognize one of our own - Ivis Carrera Valdes, a CSUHN Mental health counselor and share her story.

Ivis Carrera Valdes, a native of Cuba, embarked on a transformative journey to the United States at the age of 23. Her family's decision to immigrate to the USA necessitated her acquisition of English as a second language, a pursuit she diligently undertook. She subsequently earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of South Florida and engaged in community service. Furthering her education, she attained a Master’s degree in Counseling from the University of West Florida. Her exceptional dedication led her to secure a Post-Masters Fellowship at CSU Health Network.

Upon her arrival in the United States, Ivis's acculturation process brought awareness of her own identity, shaped by the way others treated and perceived her. She draws immense pride from her Latinx heritage, cherishing values such as service, community, humor, a love for music, dance, and culinary delights. However, she acknowledges the challenges associated with her identity, including scrutiny due to her accent, unwarranted questioning of her knowledge and abilities, and the persistence of microaggressions and occasional discrimination.

In offering guidance to fellow professionals in her field, Ivis stresses the significance of extensive personal introspection into one's identities and values. She underscores the importance of strengthening and clarifying these aspects to bolster resilience in the face of challenges. She encourages individuals to draw strength and motivation from their values, emphasizing the need to persevere while recognizing their own humanity.

Congratulations to Brie Zamora, Mental Health Care Coordinator, for being one of two CSU Health Network staff members to win the Classified Personnel Council Outstanding Achievement Award!

Brie was pleasantly surprised when she learned of her award. What she finds most rewarding about her work is assisting students. She takes pride in meeting them where they are and helping them find the support they need.

Brie's goal is to help destigmatize psychiatry and medicine management at CSU so that students feel comfortable seeking assistance.

On the occasion of APIDA x SWANA Heritage Month, we want to recognize one of our own- Apple Liu, a CSU Health Network counselor who identifies as APIDA and share her story.

Apple Liu immigrated to the United States from China on her 21st birthday and pursued her undergraduate studies in Creative Writing at New Mexico State University. After discovering her interest in people with the help of her mentors, she decided to pursue a graduate degree in counseling. It was during this time that she met her husband and eventually had a daughter named Shyla, meaning "the daughter of mountains."

Growing up in a small Chinese village at the foothills of mountains, Apple always felt connected to nature and chose to move to Colorado for that reason. She is an adventurous and curious person and loves her counseling job at CSU Health Network where she serves mostly international students and students with marginalized identities. She believes the counseling experience is spiritual and sacred, and she feels valued and grateful for the opportunity.

For Apple, discovering her identity was a gradual process, and she faced challenges such as hostile work environments and feeling targeted because of her identity. Overtime, she realized her family values and attitude towards education were different and underwent a lot of reflection and introspection in graduate school. She takes pride in the ancestral wisdom and ethics that have been transmitted to her and adheres to the Chinese philosophy that perceives humans and nature as a cohesive whole. She deeply appreciates the emphasis placed on the admiration of nature within Chinese culture. Donning Chinese dresses at work enables her to feel a sense of connectedness with her culture and ancestors. She holds her Chinese heritage in high regard, cherishing the community-centered values, language, literature, and cuisine it embodies.

Apple's advice for women holding marginalized identities who want to pursue counseling is to first know themselves and their values, find their own community which nurtures their essence, and find mentors to guide the way.

Today is the last day of # WomensHistoryMonth !

To celebrate this special occasion, we are highlighting a few of our dedicated, passionate and inspiring woman identified colleagues and thanking them for their contributions to our team.

Meet Mary Powell. She is a Psychiatric and Family Nurse Practitioner at the CSU Health Network.

While Mary started her career as a family nurse practitioner in the hospital setting, after serving in the Navy Reserves after 9/11, Mary switched paths and decided to become a psychiatric nurse practitioner. She has experience in working with adolescents and providing substance abuse treatment. Mary finds working with students and helping them discover their aspirations to be a rewarding experience.

Her advice to women is to change specialties from time to time to gain a variety of experiences and bring those insights to psychiatry. Mary believes that having a broad background in medicine is the best approach for psychiatry, and medical knowledge can help understand how the medical component affects mental health.

Happy # WomensHistoryMonth !

Meet Stephanie Zee. She is the Coordinator of Well-Being Initiatives at CSU Health Network, where she conducts educational outreach programs around mental health and well-being.

Stephanie received her undergraduate degrees in Biology and Classical Civilization from the University of California at Los Angeles, and subsequently worked in outdoor education for four years. It was during this time that Stephanie developed a passion for interacting with students and teachers. Upon her mentor's recommendation, she pursued a master’s degree in student affairs from Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA. Afterward, she worked as a hall director for four years before relocating to Appalachian State University in North Carolina, where she worked in housing for two years. In the wake of Michael Brown’s murder, Stephanie found herself supporting students of color during this racial unrest, on top of her housing responsibilities. This prompted her to shift her focus to social justice, diversity, and inclusion work.

Stephanie then joined CSU as the coordinator for diversity and inclusion for University Housing, where she implemented a diversity curriculum and collaborated with professional and paraprofessional staff to foster an inclusive environment for students. Throughout her career, Stephanie has had a passion for mental health and well-being, which led her to her current position at the CSU Health Network.

Stephanie's advice to other women is to prioritize their mental health, seek out mentors who share similar identities, and join networks. She encourages them not to worry about their journey, as it is rarely a straight line. Eventually, they will find their way, and what they are meant to do will come their way. Stephanie also emphasizes the importance of showing up as one's authentic self and surrounding oneself with people who accept them for who they are.

Happy # WomensHistoryMonth !

To celebrate this special occasion, we are highlighting a few of our dedicated, passionate and inspiring woman identified colleagues and thanking them for their contributions to our team.

Meet Ann Kennedy Schofield. She is a Physical Therapist at CSU Health Network.

She hails from the UK, where she completed her physiotherapy education and worked for two years. In 1989, she ventured to the United States for a one-year work opportunity, which eventually led her to work as a physiotherapist for the American Air Force Base for several years. In 1998, she joined CSU and has since dedicated nearly 25 years to the outpatient physical therapy clinic.

While Ann is an orthopedic specialist, she has shifted her focus to pelvic health in the last five years, particularly enjoying working with the youth population. Ann feels privileged to offer her services to everyone through different avenues and believes that her holistic approach to understanding patients' problems beyond physical limitations is crucial to healing.

Ann's advice to women is to trust their intuition and follow their hearts with confidence. She believes in owning what we have to offer and not justifying our presence. Ann suggests surrounding oneself with supportive people and not being intimidated by feelings of not belonging.
