The Fort Hall Service Unit and Shoshone-Bannock Tribal Health and Human Services want to share with the community our goal to reduce su***de by using the Ask Suicide-Screening Questions (ASQ) tool. This is a new goal for all Federal Indian Health Service facilities. The tool is approved for all ages to help health care professionals in recognizing who is at risk for su***de. Early detection is a critical prevention strategy. Starting September 1st, these questions will be asked every 3 months to everyone aged 8 and older who visit the medical clinic:

Fort Hall Service Unit: Out-of-area visitors for Festival

Every August we anticipate visitors in our clinic who are here for the Shoshone-Bannock Festival. Some may be seeking medical care and others needing medication refills. Many of these travelers bring their medications from home. However, there are those who forget, or will run out prior to returning to their home sites. Our goal is to support patient care without putting undue burden on the medical staff.

Patients that have an active prescription with another IHS pharmacy and are only needing an extension of the medications, can go directly to Pharmacy. Pharmacy staff will verify the medications with the other IHS pharmacy, which can take up to 4 hours, then will provide a 7 day extension of the patient’s medications.

Patient presenting to Medical without an appointment for an acute medical issue will be handled like other walk-in patients and worked in as the schedule allows.

Controlled substances will not be dispensed without a provider visit or transfer in between pharmacies. Patients must have a chart established at the Fort Hall IHS in order to receive care, including medications.

Federal Early Office Closure

On May 26, 2025, our Nation will commemorate Memorial Day as a federal holiday. John A. Logan, the Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army chose May 30th in 1868, to remember those who died in the Civil War, and has become a day to honor all American veterans who gave their lives in sacrifice to our nation.

As we honor those service members on Memorial Day, on behalf of the entire Indian Health Service (IHS) senior leadership team, thank you for all your contributions to the IHS mission that you make every day, and we wish you and your family and restful and safe holiday.

In recognition of the Memorial Day Federal holiday on Monday, May 26, 2025, IHS employees have been granted an early dismissal of 3 hours on Friday, May 23, 2025. Summer Safety Tips

As the weather gets better and outdoor activities increase, there also comes an increased risk for injuries. There are several things that can be done to help keep our youth safe while they enjoy the outdoors:

1. Sun protection- clothing and hats can be used to limit the skin’s exposure to the sun. Use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher on parts of the skin that will be exposed to the sun for prolonged times.

2. Helmets- activities like skating, bike riding, and riding scooters are fun but all participants should be encouraged to wear helmets and other safety gear and follow safety rules.

3. Weather safety- the weather can change at any time here in South East Idaho, so having layers is always a good idea to be prepared for inclement weather.

4. Bug protection- bug bites are more common in heavily wooded areas or areas that have stagnant water. An EPA-registered bug repellant can limit the exposure to bugs, some of which can carry diseases that are hard to treat and can cause injury or lifelong illness.

To learn more about healthy living strategies, we invite families to the Fort Hall Indian Health Service clinic for well-child checks to work together on ways to optimize your families’ health and safety. We are also here to help you and your families if you are injured.

We hope everyone has a great spring and we are excited to see you all outside in the community, on ancestral lands and waterways, and enjoying the great outdoors near and far!
