Codependency and CPTSD are the types of childhood trauma issues that cause us to live in a state of fear, shame, dread, and hypervigilance. We are generally those who struggle with knowing what a healthy boundary is, and while we learn that our feelings matter, it can be difficult to define the lines. Without anyone to model healthy communication rules, adult children need roadmaps and tools to help us become healthier.

This is why so many of us relied on television programs like The Brady Bunch for clues on 'how to act' and 'how to feel.' We didn't know what was appropriate because our homes were so emotionally abusive, neglectful, chaotic, and unpredictable. We were denied the basic skills for communicating and relating to others in healthy ways. The people we loved were so convinced they were right that they never even noticed the damage they were doing.
