Traction alopecia develops when certain hairstyles place repeated tension on the hair follicles over time. Styles such as tight braids, locks, threads, or weaves can gradually weaken the follicles and, if continued for too long, may lead to permanent hair loss.
That is why early recognition is so important. The first step is identifying and changing the styling practices that are causing the tension so further damage can be prevented. In many women, hair transplant is not the first treatment option. A careful evaluation should come first, along with appropriate non-surgical treatments whenever possible.
The goal is always to protect the existing hair, address the underlying cause, and only consider surgical hair restoration when other options have been fully explored.
