Eating Disorder Awareness Week 2023.

The pandemic was hard on just about everyone, especially those with active or emerging eating disorders. I can remember getting call after call from potential clients or parents during that time. I never saw anything like it and though it has slowed slightly, the rates are still way up from previous years.

Eating Disorder Awareness Week 2023. This number is on the rise and the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) knows this. Yet, they still released guidelines for childhood obesity and weight management that included their expressed knowledge (right in the guidelines) that these behavioral, pharmaceutical and surgical recommendations lead to eating disorders.

The holiday season is full of good cheer, family time…and stress. If the thought of overspending on presents or gathering with your relatives keeps you up at night, you’re not alone! In fact, a recent poll reveals that nearly 80 percent of people find the holidays “somewhat” or “very” stressful. ❄️

Did you know your children may begin noticing the shapes and sizes of bodies as young as three years old? They may also equate thinness with the body and beauty ideals at an early age — something they already see in books and movies. Think about Disney princesses or Barbie dolls; these characters are thin, while the villains, like Ursula or the Queen of Hearts, are often overweight. It goes beyond just noticing different types of bodies too.

Happy Halloween! 👻

This is your friendly reminder to participate in today's festivities as you feel comfortable. There is no pressure to take part in hypersexualized costumes or to overcompensate for eating candy. Diet culture is trying to fool us with these messages. Focus on the fun with family and friends, and enjoy the day!

It’s been nearly a month since we said goodbye to summer (although not to the heat!) and hello to the classroom. 🍎 As with any time of transition, the back-to-school season is often marked by anxiety. While it’s normal to feel nervous about a new teacher, the change in daily routine, impending homework, and social interactions, it’s important that the anxiety eases after an adjustment period. ✏️

A bit about me! 🤗

After I graduated with my Bachelors of Science degree in Psychology from Michigan State University, I headed back to the much-loved sunshine in South Florida, where I grew up. My first job was at The Renfrew Center in Coconut Creek, Florida — one of the top eating disorder treatment programs in the country. While working there, I completed a Doctoral program in Clinical Psychology at Nova Southeastern University. After seven years at The Renfrew Center, I transitioned to a job at the Oliver-Pyatt Centers in Miami, Florida, where I worked for five more years and earned the prestigious Certified Eating Disorder Specialist (CEDS) credentials. This distinction is only given to professionals with extensive training and experience in the field of eating disorders, helping to protect clients from those who are not well-versed in the specialty. 💙
