The Gut: Humanity’s Original Brain

Long before thought formed in the cortex, the gut was already listening. Often called the “second brain,” the enteric nervous system (ENS) in the gut predates the evolution of the cerebral brain. With over 100 million neurons—more than the spinal cord—it governs digestion, emotion, immunity, and even intuition.

The gut biome—our internal ecosystem of trillions of microbes—doesn’t just support digestion; it produces neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, influencing mood, memory, and perception. This microbial intelligence communicates directly with the brain via the vagus nerve and chemical signaling, shaping how we feel, think, and respond.

From a developmental and evolutionary perspective, the gut is the first brain: a sentient matrix that perceives, reacts, and informs consciousness. It’s not just where we digest food—it’s where we begin to digest reality.
