What is “nervous system regulation”?

Nervous system regulation is an important concept to understand when building emotional regulation skills. Especially as we learn to navigate through various life challenges and overcome barriers.

Nervous system regulation is the ability to maintain a balanced state— to shift one’s body from a state of sympathetic activation (e.g., triggering of fight, flight, freeze, or fawn) to the parasympathetic system to respond more effectively to triggers.

Often, when our nervous system enters the sympathetic system, it can trigger a “fight-or-flight” response. At this time, it can be more difficult to control our emotions, actions, and recall. Nervous system regulation allows you to notice and take control over the “fight-or-flight” responses by intentionally learning to activate the parasympathetic system.

Values are the guiding principles you choose for yourself…not expectations handed down by others.

They’re the steady ground beneath you when life feels uncertain, the compass that points you back to what matters most.

Unlike goals, which you can check off a list, values are ongoing and shape how you show up, how you connect, and how you move through the world.

When you pause to notice your values, you give yourself the chance to live with more intention. You begin making choices that aren’t just about what’s easiest in the moment, but about what feels true to you in the bigger picture.

That’s where growth happens—not in perfection, but in aligning your actions with the principles that mean the most to you.

So ask yourself: what values guide your next step forward?

What are “values”?

Values are considered one of the six core processes of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

Values are principles that guide how we move forward in life.

Values can be: respect, kindness, health, privacy, social justice, helpfulness, cleanliness… and so many more!

They are chosen by you and are principles you align with at your core.

Your values may differ from others’ values, and that is okay. Sometimes, you may even realize you may share a core value with someone when it does not appear that way initially in a given circumstance.

Take a moment to reflect: Are your current actions a reflection of your core values?

It is that time of the year again. Kids are back in school, the weather is changing, and illness is rapidly spreading.

Why is this important? When your body is fighting illness, it is working overtime, which means your energy, focus, and ability to regulate can drop.

When your body isn’t functioning at its best, increased behaviors can show up.

Irritability, low motivation, difficulty concentrating, or even an increase in challenging behaviors are natural responses to feeling unwell.

That is why prioritizing rest isn’t just about healing faster. It’s about protecting your health and the people around you.

When we push through, we risk spreading illness and prolonging recovery.

Flexibility is also a crucial factor in navigating through illness, especially for children.

Reflect on a time when you were fighting illness as an adult. It is lightly your motivation, irritability, and daily behaviors changed.

Give yourself (and those around you) permission to slow down and rest through illness. Rest is not wasted, it is important to heal and recovery.

Prioritize rest, whether it be for you or child in your life.

It’s been awhile since I have introduced myself here and with many things growing and shifting behind the scenes, I wanted to end the week with a brief introduction.

My name is Lindsay and I am the founder and owner of Blossom Behavioral Solutions, LLC.

I am a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, License Behavior Analyst, and Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist.

I founded Blossom with a mission to create a space where growth is possible for everyone, no matter where they’re starting from. My work as a BCBA and mindfulness-focused behavior coach is rooted in the belief that real change begins when we meet ourselves with understanding, patience, and compassion.

At Blossom Behavioral Solutions, we combine evidence-based practices with a mindful, individualized approach. We focus on building meaningful skills, increasing confidence, and creating lasting change for children, teens, and adults so that they can thrive and flourish, not just get by.

Outside of my work, I value time in nature, deep conversations, and quiet moments that help me reconnect to my “why.” I believe that growth isn’t about perfection. Growth is about progress, one intentional step at a time.

If you’re here for guidance, strategies, or simply a reminder that you’re capable of more than you think, you’re in the right place. I’m glad you’re here, and I look forward to growing together. 🌱

✨ You are not stuck.
It just feels that way right now.

You’re likely caught in a loop—a cycle of overthinking, fear of failure, uncertainty about the next step, or maybe even pressure to “have it all figured out.” Your brain is doing what it’s designed to do: protect you from discomfort, risk, and change.

But here’s the truth no one talks about enough:
➡️ You’re not broken.
➡️ You’re not lazy.
➡️ You’re not actually stuck.

You’re just not taking forward action yet.

In Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), we explore this common human experience. Stuckness isn’t a personal flaw—it’s often a sign you’re disconnected from what really matters to you. It’s your mind pulling you away from risk, while your heart quietly longs for something more.

ACT teaches us this:
We don’t wait to feel “ready.” We take action with the discomfort alongside us. We move in the direction of our values, one small, courageous step at a time.

Here’s something to reflect on today:
🌱 What is one tiny step I can take right now toward the life I want, even if it feels uncomfortable?

You don’t have to do it alone. Our 1:1 coaching is designed to help young adults like you—who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure—get clear on your values, break free from avoidance, and start making forward moves toward a life that feels meaningful.

Ever wonder why your child struggles with focus, organization, or managing emotions? These challenges may stem from executive functioning skills — the brain’s “management system” that helps with planning, problem-solving, and self-regulation. In this blog post, we break down what executive functioning is, why it’s crucial for your child’s development, and how you can support these skills at home.
