What is “nervous system regulation”?
Nervous system regulation is an important concept to understand when building emotional regulation skills. Especially as we learn to navigate through various life challenges and overcome barriers.
Nervous system regulation is the ability to maintain a balanced state— to shift one’s body from a state of sympathetic activation (e.g., triggering of fight, flight, freeze, or fawn) to the parasympathetic system to respond more effectively to triggers.
Often, when our nervous system enters the sympathetic system, it can trigger a “fight-or-flight” response. At this time, it can be more difficult to control our emotions, actions, and recall. Nervous system regulation allows you to notice and take control over the “fight-or-flight” responses by intentionally learning to activate the parasympathetic system.
