if there’s water, there’s a risk
life jackets aren’t optional
watching them like a hawk isn’t negotiable
drowning is fast, silent, and it doesn’t care how many swim lessons they’ve had
this isn’t about fear
it’s about facts
and one second of distraction is all it takes
so if i’m that mom who insists on rules, who packs the life vests, who doesn’t relax at the pool or beach, good
because keeping my babies alive will always matter more than keeping anyone else comfortable
water doesn’t give warnings
but we can give our kids a better chance
water safety rules every parent should know
1. life jackets are a must.
US Coast Guard approved life jackets in pools, lakes, and oceans
2. supervision means eyes on THEM-always.
drowning is silent
don’t rely on lifeguards, older kids, or distractions
3. assign a water watcher.
one adult responsible at a time
switch every 15 to 30 minutes so someone is always watching
4. no swimming alone ever.
even the strongest swimmers should never be in the water without a buddy
5. learn CPR.
seconds matter
knowing what to do in an emergency can save a life
6. teach kids to stay away from drains.
pool drains can trap hair, clothing, and limbs
show them where to avoid
7. ocean rules are different.
watch for rip currents, strong waves, and sudden drop offs
always swim where there are lifeguards and don’t rely on a lifeguard seeing everything at all times
8. know the beach flags!
green means calm
yellow means use caution
red means dangerous, stay out
double red means beach closed
purple means dangerous marine life
don’t go in unless you know what the flags mean
9. don’t assume they’re fine.
drowning can look like floating
if they’re quiet, check
if you’re unsure, go to them
10. empty baby pools and buckets immediately.
kids can drown in as little as 2 inches of water
never leave standing water unattended
11. set clear rules and enforce them.
running, rough play, and breath holding games can turn dangerous fast
life jackets save lives
supervision saves lives
awareness saves lives
