Sometimes it is hard to quantify the benefit of preventative care. Example - A patent notified me of severely elevated blood sugar over the holiday (>450). We identified the cause, discussed medication changes and precautions to take. Her numbers are improved, and we avoided a costly ER visit. Savings are easily in the range of $10-15,000; a win for DPC, my patient and personalized medicine.

Vitamin D...Why so low?
I find it intriguing that so many patients are so deficient in vitamin D. Especially in the state of Florida one would think we get enough sunlight exposure to have adequate levels. My personal observation is that the only patient with adequate vitamin D from sun exposure is often at risk of developing skin cancer. There is definitely something we are missing in the process of vitamin D production with sun exposure. This is just a reminder to talk to your doctor about vitamin D levels, maintain adequate sun protection. Also validates my practice of checking vitamin D annually at a minimum for screening.

I wanted to share a situation that is all too common in healthcare regarding service pricing.
I recommended a routine test for my patient, She requested to use insurance.
The lab I ordered was HPylori Breath test.
Cost from Lee Health Lab with insurance = Over $2000 patient fee.
Cost From LabCorp Self Pay = Less than $200 patient fee.
This is an egregious abuse of patients and insurance carriers.

As a patient you need to understand you are a consumer and you can and should price shop, go outside of insurance, and negotiate for the cost of recommended services.
