💥Wondering if your diet may be affecting your acne? 💥

There are scientific studies showing an an association between diet and acne. However, it’s important to note that correlation does not equal causation and more studies are needed to elucidate the effect of diet on acne. Our current knowledge shows an association between having a high glycemic index diet and intake of whey protein and cows milk with active acne. However, it is unlikely that a simple diet change will clear your skin.

With cooler weather this winter it is important to make sure you are taking the right precautions to protect your skin. Here’s SIX ways to keep your skin looking healthy and hydrated this winter:

➡️ Moisturize Frequently- Apply unscented thick creams or ointments at least twice daily to help retain and seal moisture within your skin. Lotions are too thin and not as helpful.

➡️ Avoid Hot Water when Showering, Bathing, or Washing Hands- Limit showers to less than 10 minutes and use lukewarm water, hot water can dry your skin out further and should be avoided. After the shower, pat skin lightly to dry.

➡️ Be Cautious with Retinoids/Acids/Exfoliation- Skin tends to be more sensitive in the cooler, dryer months. Products that weren’t irritating during the summer months may be now. You may need to decrease frequency of topical retinoids, vitamin C serums, and exfoliating acids.

➡️ Don’t Forget Sunscreen- Although ultraviolet rays aren’t as strong in the winter, they are still present. Even if it is not sunny outside, the rays can reflect through clouds and cause sunburn. Remember to apply at least an SPF30+ every morning and reapply every 60-90 minutes if outside. Zinc oxide based sunscreens are the best.

➡️ Protect Your Lips- Staying hydrated will help minimize chapped lips. Liberal use of plain vaseline is a great way to help prevent chapped lips as well. Don’t forget to apply a lip balm with SPF protection when outside. Avoid lip balms that sting or tingle as they contain ingredients which can actually cause more irritation to your lips.

➡️ Use Gentle Cleansers- Gentle cleansers are less likely to strip your skin’s protective barrier. Look for products that are «unscented,» for «sensitive skin,» or «fragrance-free.»
