CHEMISTRY CLUB ELECTIONS TODAY AT 5PM IN AB7 316!!!!
This is a great opportunity for leadership on campus and in the area of science! ALL OFFICER POSITIONS ARE UP FOR GRABS!

04/02/2013

Hi Chem Club!
We are meeting Thursday, April 11th at 5PM (location TBA). We will have presentations and elections for next year's officers of the club. If you would like to run, please prepare a brief (3-5 minutes) presentation/speech (powerpoint or just you talking is perfectly fine) about why you want to be an officer and why you would be a good one (and of course what position you are running for). WE STRONGLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO RUN - we need officers! If you have questions about the positions please ask us on facebook, email, or around campus if you see us.
See you all at the meeting! Stay Nerdy!
~Susan

"Exploring the Nature, Biogenesis and Function of Human Odors."

George Preti, Ph.D. Member, Monell Chemical Senses Center, Philadelphia
and
Adjunct Professor, Department of Dermatology School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania

Abstract: Body odors are the focal point for a multi-billion dollar consumer product industry and academics interested in human scent. Consequently, research has focused upon (a) the odors produced in the underarm and (b) underarm (axillary) secretions and odors as a source of human pheromones. Despite the fact that deo-products have been around for more than 100 years, the identity of the compounds which produce underarm odor (commonly referred to as “body odor”) have only been known since 1991 when research from our labs identified many of the volatile odorants which characterize the axillae (underarm). In addition to examining the nature and biogenesis of axillary odorants we have investigated the human underarm as a source of physiologically active compounds with pheromone activity.

Hey Chem Club!
Thanks to all of you that showed up Tuesday afternoon. If you didn't stay for the experiment, you missed out! We put dry ice into buckets of hot water to create smoke (like a fog machine). Then we dipped strips of cloth into some soap, skimmed the tops of the buckets, and HUGE smoke-filled bubbles grew until they burst! It was a blast.
