Today is World Mental Health Day.

Why Is Supporting Mental Health Important?

Mental health is essential to overall wellbeing, yet millions of people still face barriers to care. In the U.S. alone, nearly 30 million people lack access to the mental health and substance use treatment they need. These aren’t just numbers — they’re our neighbors, coworkers, friends and family. The impact goes beyond individuals, touching workplaces, schools and communities. Consider these statistics:

1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year.
1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year.
1 in 20 U.S. adults experience serious mental illness each year.
50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24
Su***de is the second-leading cause of death among people aged 10-14.
Mental health is not just a personal concern — it’s a shared responsibility. Supporting mental health strengthens families and communities. When we prioritize mental wellbeing, we create healthier workplaces, reduce social and economic costs, and foster a society where everyone can thrive. We also build resilience. We help individuals and communities navigate life’s challenges with strength and hope.

Puerto Rico and USVI: Keep yourself and loved ones safe—heavy rainfall and flash flooding is possible over the next few days. Monitor alerts and know a safe place you can go when you receive a flash flood watch or warning.

09/26/2025

A tropical wave over the northeastern Caribbean Sea will bring periods of heavy rain, thunderstorms, flood risk, and landslides to Puerto Rico and the USVI this morning through Thursday night. Late this week, a tropical depression is likely to form as the tropical wave nears the Bahamas.

A second area being monitored by the National Hurricane Center is located several hundred miles east of the Leeward Islands, and a tropical depression is likely to form later today or Thursday while the system moves west-northwestward into the western tropical Atlantic, well north of the Leeward Islands.

Visit hurricanes.gov for more.

Heavy rain and strong winds are expected to affect Puerto Rico & the U.S. Virgin Islands this week due to multiple storms moving north in the Atlantic. These storms have the potential to grow into larger hazards, so pay close attention to any alerts issued by local officials.
