We’ve been hearing a lot about people who are saying they will not get the vaccine because they don’t trust it due to how quickly the vaccine was developed. We can understand this viewpoint. . . but it’s based on some false information, so let’s look at the truth about how long it took to create a vaccine for Covid-19. According to Dr. Colleen Kraft, associate chief medical officer at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, GA, it’s important to understand that the science about coronaviruses which was behind creating the vaccine had been underway for 15 to 20 years, so it wasn’t simply developed during 2020. Scientists took what they had been working on in with coronaviruses already and then had to tweak it to fit the specific Covid-19 variant. You also want to take into account that this was an international effort of scientists across the globe working collaboratively instead of competitively, so they shared information and disseminated it as they learned more about it. The way for us to get back to “normal” is herd immunity, and the way to reach that is for those of you who are allowed to get the vaccine, to get vaccinated.
