If you have diabetes, heat can affect your blood sugar — especially if you use insulin or your blood sugars aren’t effectively managed. Hot weather may affect your blood sugar levels depending on:

What you’ve eaten
Whether you’re well-hydrated
Your activity level

If your blood sugars are mostly higher than 250 mg/dl, you should improve your blood sugar before engaging in heavy physical activity, regardless of the climate and the temperature.

Humidity can also play a role. Moist heat means your sweat takes longer to evaporate and can cause your body to work harder to cool you off.

Here’s how the heat can affect you:

🔴It may cause low or high blood sugar
🔴It may lead to dehydration
🔴It may damage your diabetes medication and equipment

Diabetes doesn’t have to sideline you from fun outdoor activities. You may just need to find the right time of day to enjoy summer (or another time of year).

🇺🇸 Happy Labor Day Weekend! 🇺🇸

Our office will be closed Monday, September 1st in observance of the holiday.

We recognize that many healthcare workers don’t get the day off — because healthcare never sleeps. 🩺💙 To all the caregivers, nurses, and healthcare heroes out there, we hope you find a moment this weekend to pause, rest, and recharge.

Thank you for all that you do to make our lives better! 🙌 ♥️

As Make-A-Will Month comes to a close, we invite you to help ensure every person can age with health and financial security.

One meaningful way to do this is by designating NCOA as a beneficiary in your will. Your legacy can help us continue connecting older adults to the resources, tools, and advocacy they need.

Through our partnership with FreeWill, you can create your will—free of charge—using accessible planning tools and resources: https://frwill.link/4o5br8M
