Handing your young child a tablet or smartphone to soothe them or calm them down is both tempting and common for today's parents - but may be affecting your child's ability to develop critical skills for self-calming later in life. How is early use shaping children’s ability to self-regulate?

Learn the foundations of self-regulation in early childhood and how it intersects with technology use at the next webinar “Meltdowns to Mindfulness - Self-Regulation in a Digital World,” the first part of a two-part series on digital media and youth self-regulation from early childhood through adolescence.

Register now to join Children and Screens on Wednesday, April 22 at 12pm ET via Zoom for a panel discussion led by experts, researchers, and clinicians on:
🗝️ What are the key components of emotional and behavioral self-regulation and how do they develop in the early years?
👶🏼 Does using screens to soothe tantrums affect a toddler’s ability to learn to calm themselves?
📱How does the lure of screens interfere with children’s learning and growth? What are unique considerations for self-regulation with digital media for neurodivergent children?
🗒️What are practical strategies parents can use to support young children when transitioning from high-dopamine screen time to other activities, while reducing conflict?

We’ve recently started a second round of visits teaching 5th graders about important health topics in our community 💙

At Ballman Elementary School, the focus this time was Healthy Screen Time 📱

In a world where technology is part of everyday life, it’s so important that the next generation understands both the benefits and the risks of screen use. Students learned about topics such as online bullying, keeping personal information private, and how screen time can affect our brain, behavior, and social interactions.

Through engaging discussions and activities, students were able to better understand how to build healthier habits and stay safe online.

This initiative continues to be made possible through the partnership between the School Based Health Center, Darby Middle School Health Sciences Academy at Darby Middle School, and Arkansas Colleges of Health Education, who help train and guide our student leaders.

We’re proud to be part of preparing our community’s youth for a healthier, safer future both online and offline ✨

Right before Spring Break, we had so much fun visiting Darby Middle School and Tilles Elementary during Parent-Teacher Conferences! Our team spent two days at each school connecting with families and sharing information about our clinic.

Being just a few steps away from both campuses, it’s especially important to us that parents know about the services available to support their children’s health. We enjoyed meeting families, answering questions, and talking about topics like sports physicals, wellness visits, school attendance, and the impact of excessive screen time.

We also handed out fun goodies like coloring books, stress balls, and sunglasses—which were definitely a hit 😎

We’re incredibly thankful to both school teams for welcoming us and giving us the opportunity to connect with the community!
