When Illness Lingers: Why It’s Important to See a Provider

😷 It feels like everyone is getting sick right now, and many people try to power through without knowing what they actually have.
During the 2023–2024 flu season, the CDC estimated 40 million illnesses and 18 million medical visits nationwide.

🤧 When symptoms drag on, guessing can make recovery slower and more uncomfortable. A lingering cough, sinus pressure that won’t go away, or a fever that keeps coming back are signs it may be more than “just a cold.”

🩺 Seeing a provider helps you get clear answers and the right care. From flu and RSV to sinus infections and strep, our team can evaluate your symptoms, confirm what’s causing them, and help you feel better faster.

📅 Don’t wait it out if you’re not improving, we’re here to help you get back on track.

Sip Smart This Fall: How Healthy Is Your Coffee? 🍂☕

As the leaves change, many of us reach for a warm cup of coffee to start the day, or an afternoon pick-me-up. But not all coffee habits are created equal. Here’s what to think about:

Cups per day: 1–3 cups is usually safe. Moderation matters!

Sugar and cream 🍫🥛: Fancy drinks with whipped cream or flavored syrups can sneak in hundreds of calories. Swapping in cinnamon or a splash of milk keeps your drink tasty and lighter.

Hydration 💧: Coffee counts toward fluids, but don’t forget water, fall air can still dry you out.

Timing ⏰: Late-day coffee can affect sleep.

A cozy cup of coffee is a fall ritual, but making smarter choices helps you enjoy it without the sugar crash or restless nights.

🧈 Happy National Butter Day!

Butter has been part of cooking for thousands of years, but many people still wonder the same thing: Is butter actually healthy?

🥛 So, is it healthy or not?
Butter can fit into a balanced diet, but moderation is important since it’s high in saturated fat. You don’t have to avoid it, just be mindful of how much you use.

🧂 Is all butter the same?
Not quite. Real butter is generally a better choice than margarine, which can contain artificial ingredients. Grass-fed butter may have slightly higher nutrients, but the biggest difference always comes down to portion size.

📏 How much should you use?
For most meals, a small amount, around a teaspoon or two, is plenty for flavor without overdoing it. Using butter intentionally in cooking instead of adding it to everything is a simple way to support better overall nutrition.

🥗 Want guidance on healthy cooking and balanced eating?
Our RVPCS dietitian team can help you build healthier habits while still enjoying the foods you love. Call your nearest clinic to learn more or schedule a visit.

Veterans Day, Honoring Our Heroes🎖️

🌎 This day shares its roots with Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, marking the end of World War I, when hostilities ceased at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. Originally called Armistice Day, it became Veterans Day in 1954 to honor all who have served.

❤️🤍💙 At River Valley Primary Care Services, we’re proud to care for the veterans in our communities and thank them for their dedication and sacrifice.

🍓 Did You Know?

More and more fruits are being grown without seeds, from grapes 🍇 to watermelons 🍉, and now even blackberries may be next! But are seedless fruits just as healthy? 🤔

💡 Studies show that fruits with seeds, like seeded grapes, watermelons, and pomegranates, often contain more antioxidants, fiber, and healthy oils from their seeds. These nutrients can help support heart health and reduce inflammation.

🌱 Seedless fruits are still healthy and convenient, but when possible, choosing fruits with seeds gives your body an extra nutritional boost.

💡 Note: While seeds in fruits like grapes, watermelons, and pomegranates are healthy, apple, cherry, and apricot seeds should not be eaten, they contain naturally occurring compounds that can be harmful in large amounts.

🍎 Want personalized tips for getting the most out of your fruits and veggies? Our dietician can help you make the healthiest choices for you and your family! 🥗

💪 Protein…is Everywhere

From shakes and bars to cereals, now even Pop-Tarts, it feels like everything these days has a “protein” in it!

Protein is important for building muscle, supporting recovery, and keeping you full longer 🥩🌱, but according to nutrition experts from the Mayo Clinic and Harvard Health, most people already get enough protein through their regular diet. Too much can even put extra stress on your kidneys and liver over time.

And remember, not all protein is the same!

🥩 Animal-based proteins (like chicken, eggs, and fish) contain all essential amino acids.

🌱 Plant-based proteins (like beans, lentils, and quinoa) can be just as beneficial when mixed for variety, plus they’re full of fiber and nutrients!

⚖️ Balance is key. You probably don’t need a “protein Pop-Tart” to meet your goals, just a healthy mix of whole foods and smart choices.

🍎 Want help figuring out what’s right for you? River Valley Primary Care Services has a registered dietitian who can help you go over your nutrition goals and build a plan that fits your lifestyle!

💁November is National Diabetes Month!

Did you know diabetes happens when your body can’t use or make insulin properly, causing high blood sugar? It can develop at any age, and risk increases with age, family history, weight, or inactivity.

📊 Quick facts:

About 12% of adults in Arkansas have diabetes, higher than the national average.

Lifestyle matters: staying active, eating healthy, and regular check-ups can make a big difference.

Ask your provider about screening if you’re 45+, have risk factors, or haven’t checked your blood sugar recently.

Let’s use this month to raise awareness and take steps toward a healthier life! 💪

🚨 ZYN isn’t “just ni****ne” it’s a trend you need to know about.

First it was smoking, then vaping… now ZYN pouches. What they all have in common?
Addictive.
Bad for your health.
Marketed by the same big to***co companies (yes, the ones behind Marlboro).

We don’t fully know the long-term effects of ZYN, but ni****ne is still addictive and can impact your heart, brain, and gums. Just because it’s “discreet” or “cool” doesn’t mean it’s safe.

💬 Parents: Talk to your teens. Users: Need help quitting? We’re here for you. Your health comes first, don’t let trends put it at risk.
