🍂🌧️ National Women’s Health & Fitness Day

As the days get cooler and rainier, it can be tempting to put fitness and wellness on the back burner. But staying active through the fall and winter is just as important as in the summer.

🏡 Stay moving indoors – try bodyweight exercises, yoga, or stretching routines at home.

🩺 Keep up with checkups – preventive visits and screenings help you stay ahead of health concerns.

🥕 Fuel your body well – seasonal foods like squash, apples, and root veggies are packed with nutrients.

🧠 Care for your mind – shorter days can affect mood, so prioritize rest, connection, and self-care.

Remember we’re here to help you stay healthy all year long, rain or shine. 💙

🍂 As Fall Arrives… Don’t Let the Cold Delay Your Health Check-In!

As the weather turns colder and things get busy, many people may hesitate to schedule that annual wellness visit. But did you know? Research shows that as temps drop, missed doctor’s appointments do increase, especially for older adults and people with chronic conditions.

Here’s why your fall wellness visit still matters:

💁Preventive care counts. Checking on things like blood pressure, sugar, and screenings now helps you stay ahead of seasonal illnesses and immune challenges.

👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️Catch issues early. Delaying care can allow small problems to become bigger.

Be ready for winter by getting immunizations like flu shots💉

Insurance & scheduling benefits. Fall tends to be less hectic than winter in many clinics; plus many insurance benefits reset with the calendar year.

What you can do:

✅ 📅Book your wellness visit while its still warm, don’t wait for winter cold or snow.

Your health doesn’t take a season off, and neither should your care. 🍁

🥛 Whole, 2%, 1%, or Skim – What’s the Difference? 🥛

When you see milk at the store, the number refers to the percentage of fat by weight in the milk:

🥛 Whole Milk - About 3.25% fat

🥛 2% Milk - Reduced-fat, with 2% fat

🥛 1% Milk - Low-fat, with 1% fat

🥛 Skim Milk - 0% fat (virtually fat-free)

💡 Which is healthiest?

If you’re watching calories and saturated fat, 1% or skim may be better choices.

If you prefer more flavor and creaminess, 2% or whole milk might suit you, but be mindful of extra calories.

For children under 2, whole milk is often recommended for healthy brain development (unless advised otherwise by a provider).

The “best” milk depends on your health goals and nutritional needs. Talk to your healthcare provider if you’re managing cholesterol, heart health, or need guidance on dairy alternatives.

🥑🎉 Happy National Guacamole Day!

Not only is guacamole delicious, it’s good for you too!
Avocados, the star ingredient, are packed with heart-healthy fats, fiber, potassium, and vitamins C, E, and K. Eating them in moderation can help support your heart, digestion, and even your skin.

🥑 Ancient snack: Avocados have been enjoyed for over 10,000 years, archaeologists found evidence of avocado use in central Mexico dating back that far.

🌎 Super sustainable fruit: Unlike many fruits, avocados don’t ripen on the tree, they only start softening once harvested. Farmers can actually “store” them on the tree until they’re ready to pick!

So, whether you dip with veggies, spread it on toast, or pair it with your favorite dish, guacamole is both tasty and full of benefits. 🥙🌽

Sitting vs. Standing: What’s Really Best for Your Health? 🪑🧍

Did you know the average adult spends more than 8 hours a day sitting? That much sitting can increase your risk of:
Heart disease & stroke ❤️
Type 2 diabetes 🍩
Dementia (for those 60+) 🧠
Even early death 📉
(Sources: Mayo Clinic, Harvard Health, National Institutes of Health)

But here’s the catch 👉 Standing all day isn’t the answer either. Too much standing can cause:
⚠️ Varicose veins
⚠️ Circulation problems
⚠️ Increased risk of blood clots
(The Guardian, WVU Health Research)

The real solution is balance!
Break up long sitting with short bursts of movement:

Walk for 5 minutes every hour 🕒

Stretch during TV breaks 📺

Take the stairs instead of the elevator

Try “walking meetings” or pacing while on calls 📞

💡 Even replacing 30 minutes of sitting with light activity can lower BMI and improve heart health!

✨ Bottom line: Sitting too much is risky. Standing helps a little. But moving more, that’s the real key to better health.

🍂 September is Healthy Aging Month

Taking care of yourself is important at every stage of life.
Too often, we get caught up in raising kids, working long hours, or managing day-to-day responsibilities, and our own health takes the back seat.

But remember this: your health matters too. 🧡 Making time for routine checkups, eating well, and moving your body a little each day can make a big difference in how you feel as the years go by.

Here in the river valley area, we know it’s not always easy, ☀️ summers are scorching, ❄️ winters can be bitterly cold. But finding small, doable ways to stay active indoors, keep up with your appointments, and focus on your wellbeing can help you stay strong and healthy no matter the season.

✨ This month, take a moment to put yourself back on your own priority list.

🚑 ER or P*P? Let’s Clear It Up! 🩺

Did you know many health concerns can be treated by your Primary Care Provider instead of the Emergency Room? Choosing your P*P first can save you time, money, and stress, and you’ll get care from someone who knows your health history.

👉 Common reasons to see your P*P instead of the ER:

Cold, flu, or allergies 🤧
Earaches or sore throats 👂
Minor cuts, burns, or rashes 🔥
Back pain or joint pain 💪
Stomach issues or urinary discomfort 🚽
Prescription refills & routine care 💊

💵 Here’s the difference:
A visit to your P*P is often much more affordable than a trip to the ER for the same concern. Why pay more when you can get the care you need close to home?

🕒 Did you know? Sometimes people go to the ER just because they can’t get a same-day appointment with their P*P. In fact, studies show that 20–40% of ER visits could actually be handled in primary care or urgent care settings. That’s a lot of people spending more time and money than necessary for issues like sore throats, minor infections, back pain, or medication refills.

🏥 When to use the ER:
Chest pain, difficulty breathing, major injuries, uncontrolled bleeding, or anything life-threatening, go straight to the ER or call 911. 🚨
