I wish you could hear the pause on the other end of the line.
“Wait… this is Dr. Voris? The actual doctor?”
Yes. It is.
I can’t tell you how many times someone is completely shocked that the doctor is the one answering the phone or returning a call. And every time, it reminds me just how far we drifted from what medicine is supposed to feel like.
For more than 10 years in the traditional system, I simply didn’t have the time. The schedule was full. The inbox was never ending. The pace was relentless. Phone calls were triaged, filtered, delegated - not because I didn’t care, but because there weren’t enough hours in the day.
Direct Primary Care changed that.
With a smaller patient panel, I actually have margin again. Margin to call someone back. Margin to check in. Margin to have a real conversation instead of a rushed exchange between exam rooms.
Do I delegate some things? Of course. Team-based care matters, but the difference is this: I can call. I do call. When it makes sense for me to be the one on the other end, I’m available.
That availability restores something important - not just for patients, but for me.
It allows me to be a doctor again.
It allows me to feel human again.
It allows me to be a better husband / father.
Honestly, it shouldn’t be surprising when a physician calls their patient.
But here we are…
If you’ve ever been shocked that your doctor answered the phone or returned your call… maybe it’s time we rethink your model.
