Spirit Lake Recovery & Wellness was honored to welcome special guest Senator Tim Mathern of District 11 for a tour of our facility & an opportunity to meet the individuals working hands-on in the treatment & recovery field every day.

During the visit, important discussions were held regarding the newly proposed IMD bill & the impact it could have on expanding treatment services. The bill would allow reimbursement funding for facilities with over 16 beds, helping strengthen treatment availability for communities in need.

Senator Mathern met with Program Manager Lakeisha Chaske, Tribal Health Manager Heather Skadsem, & CEO of Spirit Lake Health Center, Dixie Omen to further discuss the barriers our people continue to face when seeking treatment & recovery support. Conversations focused on the importance of accessible, culturally responsive care, & the continued need for advocacy & support for behavioral health services.

We enjoyed sharing lunch together, which provided Senator Mathern the opportunity to personally meet many of our clients & engage in meaningful one-on-one discussions about their recovery journeys, experiences & importance of treatment services within our community. Senator Tim thanked each client for all their hard work & encouraged them to keep moving forward.

Senator Tim Mathern expressed his full support for Spirit Lake Recovery & Wellness’ potential initiative to seek legislative support & funding opportunities aimed at increasing treatment access, expanding services, & improving availability of care for adults & adolescents seeking recovery.

We sincerely appreciate Senator Mathern for taking the time to visit our program again, listen to our staff & clients, witness all the new improvements & staff changes since his last visit, & support the ongoing efforts to strengthen recovery services for our people & communities!

“Introduction:
Sharon Cooper, Licensed Addiction Counselor

Favorite part of job:
My favorite part of my job is supporting individuals in their recovery & seeing the progress they make toward building a healthier & more stable life.

Message to community/clients:
Recovery is a process, & every step forward matters. Stay consistent & give yourself grace.

What I hope clients take away:
I hope clients leave with stronger coping skills, increased self-awareness, & the confidence to maintain long-term sobriety.”

Today we take a moment to recognize an amazing licensed addiction counselor who has left a lasting impact on our program & everyone within it. As the former program manager, her leadership set a standard of excellence that continues to guide us today! Her attention to detail was unmatched-every policy, every client need, & every aspect of the program was handled with intention & care. She brought not only professional expertise, but also a deep cultural knowledge & inclusivity that made our program stronger, more respectful, & ensured more connection to the people we serve.

Sorry we missed a staff introduction yesterday!
We’re back for another one!
Next up is the wonderful Astel Cavanaugh! 🌟
Astel is our administrative assistant, she has been at Recovery & Wellness for many years.

Astel Cavanaugh, enrolled member of the Spirit Lake Nation.
Administrative Assistant. I worked in various job positions at the SL Recovery & Wellness program over the past 10 years or so.

The mission of the Spirit Lake Nation Recovery & Wellness program is to promote recovery, wellness, unity & spirituality in the community. To this end, the staff will work together to provide a positive example of unity, wellness, & holistic balance, exemplifying their community to program goals.

R&W staff are expected to provide a supportive atmosphere for the treatment of substance abuse, reinforcing sobriety through interactions with persons who govern their own lives on a substance-free basis & understand the role of traditions, ceremony, & cultural history in maintaining a sober lifestyle. The mission statement best summarizes decades of program treatment services provided by the staff to the SLN community.

We hope to continue providing an array of treatment services to clients through culture, wellness, & unity, in partnership with qualified professionals & staff. The clients plat an important role in advancing the program’s long-term goals & objectives through their participation & evaluation of program services”

Behind every strong treatment program is someone behind the scenes keeping things in order-and for us, that is our Administrative Assistant Astel. Her dedication doesn’t always happen in the spotlight, but it is felt in every part of our program. From making sure the bills are paid on time, to keeping our policies & procedures up to date & in compliance, she ensures that we continue to operate. Her attention to detail & commitment to doing things the right way help create a stable foundation for both staff & clients.
She is the heart of our program’s knowledge-if there’s ever a question about how something works or the history behind the program & why we do what we do, she is the one we turn to. Her insight, experience, & knowledge do not go unnoticed. We are truly grateful for everything she does each day! 😊

Renae is such a strong & devoted Resident Technician. She brings a level of structure, accountability, & consistency that our clients truly need, even when it’s not always easy to receive. Renae’s strictness isn’t about control, it’s about care. It reflects her commitment to helping each individual stay on track, pushing through challenges, & builds discipline needed for long-term recovery. So while the clients say “Renae runs a tight ship”, it’s all out of love! She leads not with just rules & guidance, but with real-life perspective, showing our clients that change is possible because she’s done it herself.

Renae, your dedication, reliability, & ability to hold firm boundaries while showing up with purpose & intentions do not go unnoticed. You are helping shape lives, instill hope, & you reinforce the foundation of recovery every day.

Hi everyone!
We’d like to introduce our staff for those that may not be familiar with who we have here, what positions we have, credentials, etc. We will post one staff per day until all staff have been posted. Some are camera shy, some may have beautiful selfies along with their post 😊
We’re gonna start off strong with our beautiful Dr. Ronnesha or as many clients know her by, Dr. K ❤️ She is our Licensed Master Social Worker who particularly provides group therapy, some individual therapy, & completes alcohol & drug assessments if/when needed.

“Introduction:
My name is Dr. Ronnesha Owusu-Kyei, DHS, LMSW.
My professional background includes experience in mental health, behavioral health, & substance use services with adult population. I have worked in a variety of settings supporting individuals through assessment, treatment planning, & care coordination, as well as providing therapeutic interventions using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) & Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). My work is centered on promoting stability, recovery, & overall well-being.

Favorite Part of Job:
I enjoy creating a safe, welcoming & supportive space where individuals feel heard, understood, & empowered to make meaningful changes in their lives.

Message/Motivational Quote:
Progress may not always be easy or immediate, but every step forward matters. Give yourself grace & keep going.

What I hope clients take away from the program:
I hope clients leave the program feeling supported with a stronger sense of self, practical tools to navigate life’s challenges, & the confidence to continue their journey beyond this space”

We are so appreciative of Dr. K & all she does for our clients. She is full of compassion & empathy & consistently goes above & beyond for each & every single client. She meets people where they are, without judgement, & creates a safe space where their healing can truly begin. Whether it’s making a client feel heard, advocating for client needs, or offering words of encouragement on the hardest days, she shows up every time with empathy, patience, & genuine care. She has made a strong impact on our community & it does not go unheard. We have heard so much positive feedback on the residential group therapy Dr. K facilitates for the program. She helps restore hope, rebuild confidence, & reminds people they are not alone.
We are so grateful for the heart, dedication, & strength she brings to the Spirit Lake Recovery & Wellness Program ✨
