Our incredible team truly embraces our motto, "We Show Up," by continuously supporting our community. It was inspiring to see everyone come together for our recent Stuff the Bus donation drive with Okaloosa County School District. Our colleagues enthusiasm and creativity shined bright, especially in the beautifully decorated donation boxes!

Thanks to their generosity, we were able to donate over 500+ school supplies to students in the Okaloosa County School District. Every pencil, notebook, and backpack will help these young learners start the school year ready to succeed.

Thank you to everyone who donated and volunteered. Together, we make a difference!

According to the &LymphomaSociety, about every three minutes, someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma – the most common types of blood cancer. Blood cancer is caused by DNA mutations within blood cells. In most cases, this is linked to factors beyond our control, like age, ethnicity and family history. This Blood Cancer Awareness Month, we’re answering common questions by sharing the facts shown here.

As a part of HCA Healthcare, we give our patients healthier tomorrows through access to a connected oncology network, including nine accredited blood cancer treatment programs. Through these programs, over 1,000 acute leukemia patients receive treatment each year. For some blood cancers, the only potential cure is a blood and marrow transplant. The HCA Healthcare Sarah Cannon Transplant and Cellular Therapy Network is the nation's leading provider of these transplants, conducting over 1,500 annually. Cellular therapy is another potential treatment for those with blood cancer, and our network is also leading the way in this novel treatment.

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with blood cancer, we’re here to help. Find compassionate oncology care: https://bit.ly/3UWnOqE.

It's natural to worry about the health of your parents as they age. Afterall, aging increases their risk for several chronic diseases, including arthritis, cancer, dementia and Type 2 diabetes.

The best way to help them stay healthy is to encourage your parents to maintain their annual wellness visits, complete their physician recommended bloodwork and stay on top of their annual screenings. These screenings could include:

- Blood pressure test
- Cervical cancer screening
- Colonoscopy
- Lung cancer screening
- Skin cancer screening
- Mammogram
- Prostate exam
- Pulse oximetry test

Colleague Spotlight: Tabitha M., Emergency Department Flow Coordinator

Tabitha began her career at our hospital in March 2013 as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in the Oncology department. Driven to advance her skills, she started her journey to become an LPN. Upon graduating, she embraced a new challenge in our fast-paced Emergency Department, a move she credits to her interviewers, Jim and Michelle, for taking a chance on her.

While in the Emergency Department, she found a mentor in the Throughput Coordinator, whose leadership and efficiency inspired her to set her next goal. With renewed focus, Tabitha was accepted into the RN program on her first attempt!

After four years as a dedicated staff nurse in the emergency department, her ambition led her to pursue the Flow Coordinator position. Now, two years into the role, she is thriving as a leader. When asked what she loves most about her job, Tabitha shared, "I get to work with numbers and be a leader, as well as continuing bedside nursing and patient care. I enjoy patient care and always have!"

Please join us in celebrating Tabitha for her incredible journey and her continued commitment to our colleagues, community, and patients!

“Knowing my work directly affects my patients in a positive way confirms this is my calling,” Sofia says. “I love my hospital because I love my people. The advocacy I see from our nurses and techs inspires me every day.”

Albert Gonzalez, director of the orthopedic and medical-surgical units, said Otero’s presence is already making a difference: “Sofia’s energy, attitude and smile make our patients feel like family. Even as a new team member, she’s making a real difference.”

To all of our HCA Florida Healthcare colleagues, like Sofia, and to the more than 93,000 nurses across our larger HCA Healthcare network, thank you for showing up in ways that make our patients feel seen and cared for. Your dedication helps drive nursing forward at HCA Healthcare and beyond.

School may be underway, but there’s still time for one last camping adventure. Keep your family safe with these smart camping tips for kids:

1. Buddy up. Even bathroom breaks need a partner.
2. Set boundaries. Mark clear campsite limits so kids know where it’s safe to explore.
3. Look, don’t eat. Teach kids not to snack on berries, mushrooms or other wild plants.
4. Steer clear of rash-causing plants. Learn to spot poison ivy, oak and sumac. Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes and wash hands often.
5. Shoes on, always. Protect little feet from thorns, rocks and other sharp objects.
6. Tools aren’t toys. Keep kids away from axes, knives and other dangerous gear.
https://bit.ly/3Jmyufu petting wildlife. Even friendly-looking animals can carry disease or bite.
8. Review fire safety. Go over rules before the marshmallows roast — supervised fun is safest.

If your child gets hurt and you're unsure whether medical care is needed, our experienced, licensed nurses are available for free 24/7 to help guide you on the next steps for care. Call HCA Florida Healthcare's Consult-A-Nurse® line at 844-70-NURSE (844-706-8773).

Colleague Spotlight: Ray Sansom

This week, we’re honored to shine a spotlight on Ray Sansom from our Pastoral Care team!

Ray's journey to becoming a Board Certified Chaplain led him to volunteer with us at HCA Florida Fort Walton-Destin Hospital, HCA Florida Twin Cities Hospital, and HCA Florida Northwest Rehabilitation Center. Our colleagues were thrilled when he officially joined our team two years ago after receiving his certification.

Fun fact: his connection to our facilities goes back decades. Ray welcomed his three daughters at HCA Florida Fort Walton-Destin with his wife.

In his own words: "I’m grateful every day to journey with all the patients and families I get to spend time with as a chaplain."

Thank you, Ray, for your compassionate service to our patients, families, and community! Your kindness and sincerity inspire us all.

The DAISY Award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day. Nurses can be nominated by anyone who observes or experiences extraordinary care being provided by a nurse. Join us in celebrating, Claryssa! Read her nomination here:

"I first met Claryssa 8 years ago and what an impact she has had on my life. It’s a story I just have to share. It was my first pregnancy, and it came with many challenges. I was 26 years old and in active addiction. I was unemployed, homeless, and depressed. I had been an active IV drug user for 7 years at this point—I knew no way out and had no good support. Being pregnant and battling addiction often came with a lot of criticism, harsh, hurtful words, and no helping hand. I was in and out of HCA FWDH because I wanted nothing more than to turn my life around to be a good mother and have a healthy baby. I just needed someone to care about me more than I knew how to care for myself at the time.

Claryssa was the light for me. She never looked at me with sorrow. She never judged me. She was always encouraging and always there during my stays. 7 months into my pregnancy I found the strength to get clean. I delivered a beautiful baby girl who thankfully is very healthy, happy, and smart! The nurse has always been on the forefront of my journey to sobriety, and what a special thing that will always be for me.

Fast forward to March of 2025, I am pregnant again! I was sent to the OB ED at 35 weeks for high blood pressure and vision loss. The curtain opened and I had instant tears. It was Claryssa! I couldn’t believe it. The hug she gave me was everything I needed. Seeing her again for my second baby with all the years of recovery behind me was incredible. She deserves the world for the impact she has made on my life. I am so thankful to know her and to love her more than just my nurse. Please hug this beautiful soul for me. She saved my life."
