Positive thinking and cognitive restructuring have helped many clients reframe negative self-talk and challenge distorted thinking.
But let’s be clear:
They’re surface-level interventions in the broader context of how the brain processes belief.
Encouraging clients to “just reframe it” or practice gratitude may create temporary relief but unless the underlying neural pathways tied to threat, emotion, and self-concept are addressed, the original belief pattern often returns under stress.
Second-wave cognitive therapies taught us how to identify distortions:
— All-or-nothing thinking
— Catastrophizing
— Jumping to conclusions
The client learns to challenge them…
But what if they could actually repattern them?
In a brain-based orientation, we move beyond managing the thought and instead, work with the system that keeps generating it.
That’s the shift.
And that’s where long-term transformation begins.
