Movement is meant to be medicine, but issues can arise when we get the dose, the frequency, or the intensity of that medicine wrong. ⁣

The amazing thing about our body is that it ADAPTS to the stimuli and stresses we apply to it. We just want to make sure those adaptations are positive in nature. So the more curiosity we can bring to our movement practice, and the more critical thinking we can apply, the more informed our choices are going to be regarding those adaptations! ⁣

Frozen shoulder anyone?? ⁣

If I had a dollar for every time a student shared with me that they have a “tweaky” shoulder, a “bad” shoulder, or a “frozen” shoulder I’d have quite the stash of cash.⁣

Sadly these refrains are far too common not just in the yoga world, but in our aging population, and among women especially. I recently came across these old gems a sweet friend graciously took of me over a decade ago. ⁣

I find them super interesting now as they tell the story of how I was showing up in my body at the time - replete with my old default holding patterns and “unconscious” movement choices. ⁣

At the time, I had no idea how biased my movement patterns were toward extension, nor that it was taking me down a slippery slope of limited options and unbalanced being.⁣

Thankfully, I no longer habitually lock out my knees or flare my front ribs. And that’s not to say that knee extension or spinal extension are “bad” movements, or that we should avoid these patterns. On the contrary; extension is an important piece of the movement puzzle, and we should absolutely include it in our movement practice. ⁣

The problem lies in the “unconscious” part. When we aren’t aware of our movement tendencies and biases, we unknowingly reinforce those neural pathways and make it harder and harder for our mind/bodies to access a different way of moving . We run the risk of developing habits that don’t serve us, not bc they are inherently bad, but bc they rob us of variability! ⁣

Variability is key for the health and longevity of our organism! Our mind/bodies want movement options and new, novel input! And when we cruise on “auto-pilot” we limit our options and risk cutting ourselves off from the deep reservoir of choices that are available to us at any given moment. ⁣

It’s like that old adage: “be careful what you practice bc you’re going to get good at it”. ⁣

What are you unknowingly “getting good” at?? What movement habits would you make a conscious effort to reinforce or perhaps change??⁣
