Do you want to know more about the process of EMDR therapy?
EMDR is a structured process that helps your brain work through unprocessed memories and experiences that are still affecting you.
EMDR is done in phases, and each step builds on the last so you feel supported the entire time.
It starts with understanding your story. Your therapist helps you look at what brought you in, your triggers, and how you’ve been coping.
Then you learn tools. Before any deep work begins, you’re taught ways to handle stress, regulate emotions, and stay grounded.
Next, you identify specific memories or experiences to focus on. These are often the things that still feel unresolved or keep showing up in your reactions.
From there, the processing begins. Using guided techniques, your brain works through those memories in a safe environment so they lose their intensity over time.
You’re not reliving it. You’re reprocessing it in a way that finally allows your mind and body to settle.
Throughout the process, your therapist helps you stay regulated and builds in coping strategies so you feel in control.
At the end, you look at how things have shifted. The goal is that what once felt overwhelming no longer has the same hold on you.
So how do you know if EMDR might be a good fit?
You feel stuck in patterns you can’t break
Certain memories still feel very intense
You have triggers that seem bigger than the situation
You’ve tried talking through things but still feel the same
Your reactions don’t match what you logically know
At New Heights Counseling, we have therapists trained in EMDR who will walk you through each step at your pace.
You don’t have to figure this out on your own.
