April is Stress Awareness month.
However, it is also Alcohol Awareness Month.

Alcohol is one of the most normalized substances in our culture, but that does not mean it is harmless.

What starts as stress relief, social drinking, or “just taking the edge off” can slowly turn into something that affects your sleep, your mood, your relationships, and your overall health.

Some signs it may be time to take a closer look:
• Drinking more than you planned
• Needing it to relax or cope
• Feeling worse the next day, physically or emotionally
• Others expressing concern
• Trying to cut back but struggling

You do not have to hit a breaking point to ask for help.

Support, clarity, and real change are possible.

Living with physical pain every day takes a toll that people don’t always see.

It affects your sleep
Your energy
Your patience
Your ability to enjoy normal, everyday moments

Over time, that kind of strain doesn’t just stay physical. It can start to impact your mood. You may feel more withdrawn, more overwhelmed, or just not like yourself anymore.

Chronic pain and depression are closely connected. When your body is constantly hurting, it is exhausting mentally too.

If you have been dealing with both, you are not alone in that experience.

Therapy can help you work through the emotional weight of ongoing pain, build coping tools, and find ways to feel more in control again.

Do you want to know more about the process of EMDR therapy?

EMDR is a structured process that helps your brain work through unprocessed memories and experiences that are still affecting you.

EMDR is done in phases, and each step builds on the last so you feel supported the entire time.

It starts with understanding your story. Your therapist helps you look at what brought you in, your triggers, and how you’ve been coping.

Then you learn tools. Before any deep work begins, you’re taught ways to handle stress, regulate emotions, and stay grounded.

Next, you identify specific memories or experiences to focus on. These are often the things that still feel unresolved or keep showing up in your reactions.

From there, the processing begins. Using guided techniques, your brain works through those memories in a safe environment so they lose their intensity over time.

You’re not reliving it. You’re reprocessing it in a way that finally allows your mind and body to settle.

Throughout the process, your therapist helps you stay regulated and builds in coping strategies so you feel in control.

At the end, you look at how things have shifted. The goal is that what once felt overwhelming no longer has the same hold on you.

So how do you know if EMDR might be a good fit?

You feel stuck in patterns you can’t break
Certain memories still feel very intense
You have triggers that seem bigger than the situation
You’ve tried talking through things but still feel the same
Your reactions don’t match what you logically know

At New Heights Counseling, we have therapists trained in EMDR who will walk you through each step at your pace.

You don’t have to figure this out on your own.

Anxiety can take over in a way that feels impossible to explain.

Your mind won’t slow down. Your body stays on edge. Even when you know you’re safe, it doesn’t feel that way.

It’s something your brain has learned to hold onto.

That’s where EMDR therapy can help.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence based approach that helps your brain process distressing memories, triggers, and patterns that keep anxiety going. Instead of just managing symptoms, it works at the root level so your mind and body can finally begin to settle.

At New Heights Counseling, we have therapists trained in EMDR who are ready to walk through this with you. You don’t have to stay stuck in the same cycle.

You can feel calm again. You can think clearly again. You can get your life back.

Learning about stress is one of the most important things you can do for your health. The more you understand it, the easier it becomes to recognize what is happening and respond in a healthier way.

Start by paying attention to your own patterns. Notice what triggers your stress, how your body reacts, and when it feels the most overwhelming. Small changes at home can help, like improving sleep habits, setting boundaries, and creating time to slow down.

But lasting change usually requires more than trying to manage it on your own. A therapist can help you understand the root of your stress, identify patterns you may not even realize are there, and give you tools that actually work in real life.

Support at home matters, but having professional guidance can make the difference between coping and truly getting better.

You deserve more than just getting through the day.

Stress does not stay small when it is ignored. It builds and over time, it starts to show up in ways that are hard to overlook.

You might notice you are more irritable than usual. Small things feel bigger than they should. You are tired but cannot sleep well. Your mind will not slow down, or you feel completely drained and unmotivated.

It can show up physically too. Headaches, tight shoulders, stomach issues, a constant feeling of tension in your body.

You may start pulling away from people, losing patience with your family, or feeling like you are just trying to get through the day.

Left unchecked, stress can affect your relationships, your health, and your ability to function the way you want to.

Pay attention to what your mind and body are telling you. It matters more than you think.

April is Stress Awareness Month

It is a time to bring more attention to how stress shows up in everyday life and the impact it can have over time. Stress can affect your sleep, your mood, your focus, and even your physical health.

For many people, it becomes part of the daily routine without much thought. Days feel full, schedules stay busy, and there is very little space to slow down and check in.

This month is a reminder to pause, take a closer look at what you are carrying, and begin to understand it a little better.

If you are feeling overwhelmed, you do not have to carry it on your own. We are here when you are ready. Please call 850-757-9444 or follow this link https://florida-counseling.com/staff/whitnie-scruggs/

Play might look like just games or drawing
But in therapy, it’s how real change happens

Play based therapy gives children a way to practice skills without pressure

They’re learning through doing

During sessions, we’re helping them build:

• emotional regulation
• flexible thinking
• problem solving
• communication skills

They’re also learning how to:

• recognize feelings in their body
• catch frustration earlier
• use calming tools
• express what they need

We even practice everyday challenges like transitions

moving from one activity to another without overwhelm

Because for many kids, that’s where things fall apart

The best part is that it doesn’t feel overwhelming or stressful

It feels safe
low pressure
and even fun

But underneath that
their confidence is growing
their reactions are changing
and things start getting easier at home

Small shifts
real progress
lasting skills
