One more reminder to take care during this holiday season -the best Christmas gift this year is to stay safe and live to next Christmas. We have three grandchildren we haven’t seen in a year. And it hurts. But the greatest present we can give them is their continued lives and trying to keep ourselves safe enough to see them next year.

We had hoped everyone would have a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving. However, apparently the virus has not taken a break, and our schedule has started filling up with patients testing positive after spending time with loved ones over the holiday. We just lost one of our dearest patients who has been with us for 40 years.

Please, even if you think masks are over-rated, and one afternoon with family members should be okay, please wait. You are precious to your family, friends and us, and we would rather wait a while to see you than never see you again.

Meanwhile we are mostly conducting patient visits via Telehealth, for your safety as much as ours. If Dr. Wilson feels you need to be seen in person, we will make special arrangements to keep you safe.

Have a marvelous, quiet holiday with your immediate family, and we’ll all see each other at the end.

We came across this today - perhaps it will be helpful. It echoes concerns we have heard in the office. Reaching out to another person is best done virtually or over the phone right now. Stay well, and reach out to us safely over the phone via telehealth, or masked in person. Dr. Wilson will be the tall masked man with white hair.

For something a bit different, this is a photograph of a single human cell, obtained using nuclear magnetic resonance and cryoelectron microscopy data sets. It is estimated that there are 30 trillion cells in a single body.

Several of our patients have asked whether or not they should get flu, pneumonia and/or shingles shots as we await COVID vaccines. This is a general concern and as the saying goes, we’re glad you asked. You should maintain your normal vaccination schedule. We currently have flu and pneumonia shots in house. Shingrix is available at most pharmacies. We may soon have a shingles vaccine in house (such as Shingrix) but availability is irregular. Obviously we will alert you when and if we get access to COVID vaccines. Looking forward to the light at the end of the tunnel. However, the current pace of coronavirus is horrific, so please take care, wear masks, and quarantine for a while longer.

FYI, 42 of our patients have contracted COVID; one has died. This disease is as real as it gets.

The US is averaging more than 46,000 new Covid-19 infections each day -- up 12% from the previous week and more than double what the country was seeing in June, as lockdown restrictions were easing.

One of the comments attached to this data is “no one is listening.” I am afraid this is true. But although a high percentage of Okaloosa residents are through with COVID, the virus is not finished with us. There were four additional deaths yesterday.
