Our Story

The story of the Mental Health Bell. β€œCast from the shackles that bound them, this bell shall ring out hope for mentally ill persons and victory over mental illness.

In 1953, the Mental Health Bell became the symbol of the National Mental Health Association and all Affiliates Chapters. The 800 lbs Bell is rung each year and was cast in the shape of the U.S. Liberty Bell as a symbol of freedom from the oppression of mental illness.

The Mental Health Association of Okaloosa/Walton Counties, established in 1958, is a not-for-profit, United Way Agency, that provides mental health services and resources free of charge. The Association promotes mental wellness through service, support, treatment, education, and advocacy.
