Many families had a veteran loved one pass away during the Covid-19 Stay-at-Home Order, which prevented them from having a military honors funeral.

The Marine Corps League Detachment 1435 Pride and Purpose, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 857 and American Legion Post 499 will conduct a Ceremony on Saturday, July 11, 2020 at 11:00 am at VFW Post 857 located at 2202 West Main Street, Fort Wayne, on the corner of West Main Street and Leesburg Road.

During the ceremony, the joint veteran organizations will render a 21-gun salute, play taps, fold each flag for the family, read the veteran's name, date of death and branch of service, and present the folded flag to the family.

Families interested in this military honors recognition are requested to call Alena Gillum after 5:00 pm at 260-435-0184 to register. It is open to the public.

There will also be a flag retirement ceremony at this event. The public can drop off flags for retirement at the VFW between 2:00 pm - 7:00 pm, or bring them the day of the ceremony at 11:00 am.

National Nurses Week starts today with National Nurses Day, and if ever there was a year to celebrate health care workers, this one is it.

Reach out to any nurses you know and thank them for their commitment to your community and the well-being of others.

The roots of International Nurses Day goes back to 1953, when Dorothy Sutherland of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare sent a proposal to President Eisenhower to proclaim a "Nurse Day" in October of the following year. The proclamation was not officially made. But, this day was born and eventually gained national recognition.

International Nurse Day is celebrated on May 12, because this it is the birthday of Florence Nightingale.

In 2003, National School Nurses Day was moved from the fourth Wednesday in January to the Wednesday of Nurses Week.
