Our CEO, Leslie Friedel, was recently featured on the Senior Care: Unscripted podcast in an episode titled “A Legacy of Compassion in End-of-Life Care.”
In this thoughtful conversation, Leslie reflects on her journey into hospice leadership and what it means to steward an organization with a 137-year legacy of service. She shares insights on mission-driven leadership, the importance of dignity and empathy at the end of life, and how Stillwater Hospice continues to evolve to meet the needs of patients and families across northeast Indiana.
This episode is a meaningful listen for healthcare professionals, nonprofit leaders, caregivers, and anyone interested in how values-based leadership shapes compassionate care.

As one year ends and another begins, we remember the lives that shaped us.
The stories told. The love shared. The legacies that remain.

We are honored to have been present in these sacred moments—and to continue supporting families through grief in the days and months that follow.

Holding space for remembrance. Always.

Every dollar has dignity.
Every gift has a story.
Because of generous support this year, families received care regardless of their ability to pay. Pain was eased. Questions were answered. No one walked their final chapter—or grief—alone.
This is what compassion looks like in action.
And it’s only possible because of you.

A century of commitment

The seeds of Visiting Nurse were planted in 1888, when women of the growing city of Fort Wayne, Indiana, banded together to deliver food and medicine to the “sick poor.” On March 1, 1900, Visiting Nurse was incorporated and hired its first paid nurse. Visiting Nurse’s mission is to provide compassionate care to alleviate suffering and ensure quality of life for those affected by serious illness through our hospice and palliative care services. Visiting Nurse cares for those who go on living, with grief support services available at no charge for any adult who has experienced the loss of a loved one. Hospice involvement is not required. We serve these Indiana counties: Adams, Allen, DeKalb, Huntington, Noble, Wabash, Wells and Whitley.
