What is Hydration Anyway?

Do you drink what seems to be a lot of water or constantly put more salt on your food? You’re not alone and there is likely a reason why. There seems to be a “new craze” about drinking more water, but not just water; you need water + electrolytes. Is this really a new fad, though? And what do electrolytes do for you and why do you need them, even when you’re not working out? We’ve all heard we need more water and most of us likely do need more water. Not only do we need more water, but we need clean water. There are many filters on the market today to clean your water such as a reverse osmosis system hooked up to your sink, water bottles with filters, and water containment jugs that will filter your water. There are pros and cons to all these options. The pros are that you are filtering out the chlorine, fluoride, PFA’s, and other chemicals that have been dumped into the water system. The cons, you filtered out all your minerals. Who knew we needed and have always had minerals in our water that we drink? This is something I’ve been learning a lot more about over the last 4-6 months. So let’s get a little more into this.

Water comes from aquifers, which are under us. Well systems, in rural homes, tap into aquifers but do not generally go all the way down to the bottom of the aquifer. Ever heard of a natural spring? That’s water that has risen to the surface from an aquifer. As the water comes up from an aquifer, it is “filtered” by nature. It is filtered through the many layers of the earth and elements which allows it to come to us clean. On its journey the water also picks up many elements our bodies need for hydration and body processes. The minerals water naturally gains are sodium, calcium, potassium, and magnesium which you need for cortisol, adrenaline, noradrenaline, metabolism, nervous system health, and regulating blood pressure. Back to the minerals though, our reverse osmosis systems and filters in our fridges remove not only all the harmful things we do not want to drink but also the helpful ones we do want to drink. Out of all the mineral’s we’re missing, the one you need the most is sodium. Most people, including myself, would have never thought about this. This explains why many of us crave salt or drink MORE fluids than we need. I know I do.

So onto electrolytes, what are they? Well stated simply, they’re minerals, minerals you need to put back in your water. So is it really just a new crazy fad or is it just humans getting back to “humaning”? I would say the latter. Have you ever worked out, went for a long walk, did yard work, or anything else that requires a lot of energy? Were you thirsty? You probably were and yes, your water felt and tasted so good and yet, later you were still likely drained. Next time, try putting some electrolytes in your water. In fact, why not add them to your water all the time? And I know, I know, you might say well it’s only for athletes, and I’m here to say no it’s not. All of those minerals play a function in your body. Your ancestors, from not that long ago, were drinking these minerals even when they weren’t exercising. If you are doing physical activity, you just need more water and more electrolytes because you are using or sweating more of them which makes the need more apparent. However, don’t rush out and start buying all those high marketed ones at your local stores and gyms. They are full of sugar and let’s all be honest for a moment, do you need sugar to stay hydrated? Is sugar a mineral that’s always been in our water? I haven’t found any research that says it has. Even better, if you have the time or the passion/desire you can also just go and find your own spring water and collect it yourself! Then you get all the minerals you need. Just go to https://conta.cc/47nVpP3 and put in your zip code. They also have helpful information on spring water and why you need it.

Electrolytes in general are becoming more available. Now you can find some that are stevia sweetened and some without any sweetener. One of my favorite brands on the market is LMNT. They make many flavors to keep your water fun too. Many brands, including them, may not be affordable for lots of people, though and I understand that. They have their formulations on their website, and you can find many ways to make your own through sites like Pinterest. You only need about 1/8 tsp once you’ve mixed it yourself in a glass of water. Let me tell you though, if you make your own, at first it tastes like you’re drinking the ocean. I know, it’s kind of funny and weird. I like to mix in lemon, lime, or watermelon juice, but there are many fruit and veggie (cucumber) combination possibilities. Over time, you’ll get used to the flavor, and over time, you’ll notice you feel better and likely have more energy. I’ve noticed I’m more satisfied throughout my day with my water upgrade, and I still like salt on my food but it’s more like a shake instead of 5 shakes of salt. Coffee has many benefits including reducing risk of cardiovascular disease, some cancers & parkinsons due to it's high levels of polyphenols & antioxidants. It's also not for everyone. Knowing your body is key! Just don't be scared to enjoy your coffee. I love my daily cup of espresso & raw milk.

Why is My Body Failing Me??!!

Isn’t that the question of every person with chronic illness/autoimmune disease? Why is my body failing me, again!? Just when you think you’ve turned a corner there’s another diagnosis. Another unexplained, possibly unknown root of a diagnosis that needs another supplement, prescription, or treatment.

This was my feeling, my question, my sadness a week ago when I was diagnosed with Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency, basically my pancreas isn’t making the enzymes it needs to break down fats and proteins. My doctor said it happens, and I need to take this $2900 prescription before every meal to help the process and that supplements that you can buy at your local health food store or online don’t usually help. I did not get the prescription and yes for now I’m taking a supplement enzyme and I’m already feeling so much better. Lastly, no, against the common conventional trope, it doesn’t just happen!

So why is my body failing me??!! The answer, plainly, is that it’s not but I know it seems like it is. My body and your body wants to heal itself and wants to be at homeostasis. Chronic illness is complex and multi-layered exposing years of trauma, a standard American diet, sedentary lifestyles, genetic & epigenetic factors, and lives not in tune with Christ and His beautiful creation. Your body is just manifesting all those factors, all those complexities and they are rising to the surface. Just like the multi-layered factors of chronic illness rose, you are now on the journey to multi-layered healing. I am not saying you did this to yourself and I would like to encourage and to embolden you to heal yourself. Run towards God; run towards sleep and rest; run towards nourishing meals and run towards healing trauma. There’s evidence that it will help your long term health journey.

Personally, the hardest swallow for me on this is that I’ve spent the last 5 years caring for my diet, my exercise, my sleep, my time outside and all the factors I feel like I can possibly control, and yet I was still diagnosed with EPI. The root cause of this diagnosis could be many other issues that are just simmering inside me. Chris Kresser has a podcast called Revolution Health Radio, and I listen to pretty much everything he comes out with. His podcast on “Finding Joy in the Midst of Illness, Pain and Difficulty” hit me last year, and I’m reminded of this again. He said that it may take years to figure out the root cause and it might never be found. He explains in the podcast that aside from particular supplements or maybe even medication you may need, that all root causes in chronic illness are going to have the same treatment plan and that is lifestyle changes. What are those lifestyle changes? They include stress management, sleep, movement, nutrition, and spirituality. At that moment, about a year ago, I was trying so hard to figure out my health concerns and I wasn’t spending the time to rest, relax, nourish and move. I was driving myself crazy with the question of what is wrong with me and not the question of how I can get better. I was increasing my stress response with the what was wrong and why is my body failing me. When I started making lifestyle changes, I started having more calm and peace. I was also able to hear what my body wanted more of, sometimes it was water, more sleep or more fruit. The results were more time enoying life.

The good news again is, my body wants to heal. I trust that I have such a good, good Father who wants to give me bread and not snakes. He has created all the tools for our lives and amazing doctors who do care. I will be seeing a new doctor to help me care for my health needs and I will keep on doing all my self care routines to lower inflammation in my body and bring just overall peace in my life. I will also remember to have faith and trust that God is carrying me through a journey and living in contentment. One of my favorite meditations is with Breathe & Flow as they guide through a contentment meditation about being “thankful for my life exactly as it is”. That doesn’t mean I have to accept this illness and not seek healing. This means that as I walk through the process of chronic illness and root causes I can continue
to build on the pillars and foundations of management that Ive already set place in my life; those lifestyle changes I mentioned above. I can take what I've learned and done to help others with chronic illness set up their pillars of healing and health and I can shine a light a little brighter of hope and love.

If I can leave you any encouragement at all it would be: grieve your illness, journal, meditate and move yourself beyond your illness. Lastly, never give up hope my loves and live the fullest lives you can.

I can’t wait to talk to you about so many things about life and chronic illness and until then, keep living!

All my love,
~~The Nourished Body, llc~~
